Post by: vdub_adz on 31 January 2008, 15:45
i have all my paper work for my golf at my brothers address and my driving licenses is also. but i stay with him when im not workin due to step-dad a nob. im startin a new job and told them that im living with my mum and step-dad. and now they want a copy of my driving licenses but its got my brothers address on it. they want it to say the address they have. so will my car insure be void and will i get done if i get pulled over by the police????

I wouldnt think you would get "done" if you get pulled over because it just show up as you having insurance I would have tought. However if you want a make a claim it might be void as location of where the car is kept and lives (e.g not where you have told them it is) makes a hugh diffrence in price. Just tell them that you have moved house and this is your new address, simple.

When you say you car share, does that mean your the 2nd driver? If your the 2nd driver, then it shouldnt matter that your address is diffrent, as long as the main driver lives at the post code he said he does in the insurance, the 2nd drive can live in Australia for all they care.

When you are stop-checked by the Police, they can complete checks on their databases to make sure that you have a licence, insurance and MOT for the vehicle. Technically it is an offence not to change your address on your licence but you would never get in trouble for that.
Like Aland said, Police only care that the insurance is held on the car for the person driving - if not then it is seized under S.165 Road Traf Act which means they can will take your car away (roughly £105) and then storage of £15 approx per day until you take out insurance for it. After 14 days, it will be crushed. You can also disclaim rights to the vehicle at the roadside to save the cost of seizing, etc (but only worth doing if you car is a banger).
If you come to make a claim and you are not residing where you have told them, you will prob end up with a bigger excess of around £500.

Insurance companies will do anything to not pay out, why take the risk?!

I had my car reg'd and insured at my parents address but lived elsewhere. It got stolen and burned out there and the police/insurance didn't give a sh!t, paid out no problems.

It's not as if everyone always keeps their car at home overnight is it? How would they know it wasn't a one off visit?

Bare in mind though my parents address at this point was still my 'official' address - on electoral roll there etc, and where I was actually living was just rented digs with mates.
