Title: What have I got TDi/GTi/Anniversary edition?
Post by: ju suis le fromage on 31 January 2008, 10:58
I have read countless threads about this subject and I am none the wiser.

The car I bought came direct from a dealership in Germany according to the log book but was registered in England on a 53 plate. The car is right hand drive, with a GTi (red I) badge although judging by other threads this means nothing. The engine has a red TDI badge on top, and according to the log book the car is 150bhp

The car has a load of extras such as Xenon headlights, headlight washers, rock hard suspension (not sure if this is sports or not) six gears, electric windows all round, heated and electric door mirrors, anti glare rear view mirror, trip computer, cruise control, 16 spoke VW alloy wheels.

I have insured this as a 150 TDI, is this correct? And can someone please explain the difference between the TDi/Gti and anniversary edition?

You would know if you got an Anni edition as it has different interior and exterior, the Anni's only come as 52 plates too I believe. The seats are different, it has a certain type of 18" alloys, different rear valance, front splitter, steering wheel and is lower than a standard Gti

Gti's are petrol models only, but they come as 1.8 non turbo's, 1.8 turbo's and the 2.0ltr 8v's.

You no doubt have a GT Tdi mate, which is a 150bhp engine and comes with the mods that you have mentioned.

I have seen a 150 TDI badged from the factory as a GTi with a red i.

I have seen GT TDI's badged as a Red "i" too.

Then they guy who had it (who was someone who I know), turned round to me and asked how come my car had also been given a Red "i" - Clearly he failed to realise that his diesel car had the Red "i" since it now came close to the performance of my 1.8T car, and not the other way round!

I had to put the poor chap in his place!

my book actually lists mine as a GTI-exec

As Ash said thats a GT TDI for sure; sounds similar to Ridge's

sounds exactly the same as mine but slightly younger

the difference between the TDI 150 and the anniversary include;

18" BBS rims,
even lower suspension (TDI 150 has the same as the 1.8T),
bigger brakes,
body kit,
anniversary trim inc unique gear stick & steering wheel,
anniversary cloth seats,
anniversary headlights (smoked sort of)

i think the headlining was black too  :undecided:

the TDI 150 is the best MK4 anyway

You cant be saying that the 1.8 petrol is better than the 2.0 oil burner?

apparently they raced the MK5 GT Sport (TDI 170) against a MK5 GTI (not sure if it was the pony one or the ED30) but the TDI won

R32 is clearly the best mk4 lets be honest then comes the 1.8t

which TDI and which 1.8T? as a 90 TDI against a 1.8T is hardly a fair contest lol

I'll race you  you can choke on my diesel smoke

LoL, yes I will choke on the diesel smoke...as I come round to lap you yet again!

But back to serious matters....it was the very same Red "i" GT TDI i spoke about earlier.  Both him and me had stock motors, both pushing 150bhp out.  I admit it was close, but then it doesnt matter how much you win by, its the fact that you win!

I think that once you start to tune the motors, the TDI produces a very rapid everyday car.  But a tuned 1.8T is just a different ball game.  Stock, they are very close if not equal, but once you start tuning, i think that gap opens up a lot, and in favour of the 1.8T.

Or dont you guys agree?

yebut you'll have to stop twice as often for fuel

i agree the petrol has far more tuning potential; can't argue that.  But it gets to a point where the power becomes silly and unusable especially as the MKIV's chassis isn't great even in standard form

I don't believe it, the diesel must have more torque than the petrol. Most petrol heads don’t like to admit that the diesel is faster 0-60 and gets better mileage and the engine is going to last longer.

No competition they just don’t like It up them

LoL - true!

I guess we both the TDI and 1.8T are two great motors, and are infact, among the better points of our cars!

I always wondered why they offered the V5....what was the point of that one?

probably something that all of us derv and petrol alike will agree on: it was only made for that that didn't want to be classed as a boy racer (1.8T) and couldn't afford the V6

you can get a conversion can't you for a few grand

personally i'd have liked a TDI 4 motion like the MK5 got or even the 3.2 TDI from the A4

I kid you not, I did win. Plus its not just about the torque.  It depends on many other factors too, not least of which is how you drive etc.  Plus, lets face it, not every car of the production line delivers 150bhp, I would say its probably +/- about 10 to 15% on that.

My mate James is doing the conversion on a 4mo mk4 and put a BAM KO4 1.8t lump in it. Il whack some pics up when its done, they just sourcing an engine now, he'l have it done in a week too

why is he f*cking about with that (you as well as anyone should know about the mk4 transplant nightmares  ) when you can buy off-the-shelf supercharger and turbo kits for the v6 which will p!ss all over any k04 1.8T ?

The only reason mine took so long was because I went to the wrong people and didnt know this guy then.

He can do it quickly, Trust me! He's got a g60 rallye too and he blew his supercharger, put in a BAM lump into it in 4 days and now its a 300bhp 4wd beast, il get some snaps up soon.

AlanD and a few others can varify he knows his stuff

Yeah but the most you can get from a k04 with a car running a cat is ~280bhp, and the entire setup will cost the same if not more than a bolt-on kit that will push 350+ from the V with a f*cktonne more usable torque. Its your mission to get him to change his mind

vf engineering is the first one that springs to mind (nik saran racing developed the vw kits), there's eip who do a twin turbo, hpa do the same.. C2 motorsports now have a UK outfit and they do a rather tidy oem looking turbo package. links? far too lazy for that.

yeah the race vid is really really good

aren't they meant to be going for the V10 which will still be a beast

also the smaller displacement and lower horse power TDI A4, is quicker than the petrol A4

so DERV wins!!

Not got mine yet, on the to do list.

I read on Auto-Car website (or something like that) that the V12 they showed off over in the states was just a concept and that the it wouldnt be econimicaly viable to build a box that could handle the torque a V12 derv would trow out.

haven't u subscribed yet!!?? in this months theres a nice 2 page article

there's a few bugs to iron out in that it will add weight and you'll lose the stowage space behind the seats.  But they want to use an all new DSG box which will be able to handle the torque

Article ends - 'Unless Audi catches a cold due to the global slowdown then bet on the V12 diesel R8 appearing in showrooms from mid 2010.  After all if Professor Piech can rubberstamp the 1000bhp Bugatti Veyron for production, doing the same for a diesel R8 should be a walk in the park'
