Guys, this has bugged me for a while, but seems to have gotton worse now.
I have a metallic sounding rattle/knocking on my car. Its noticable when:
- I first start up (but that could be linked to the next point)
- I blip the throttle slightly (800 -> 1200 rpm)
- When I go over a bump in the road.
Any ideas? Someone once said its the middle exhaust bracket. Is this correct?
What choices do I have? Also, what else could it be? Really starting to bug me.
-
Most likely to be your exhaust bracket if not check engine mounts.
-
How can I check those without a ramp?
Where is the exhaust bracket located (where abouts on the exhaust should I be looking)
-
You could also try any heat sheilds too.
-
could be the cat heat shield, the spotwelds crack and makes a tinny rattle at certain rpms, fairly common
edit: someone beat me to it ^
-
lol - racers on the road, racers on the forum!
-
Is it just a case of squeezing under the car and trying to rattle the heat sheild round the cat, and the one at the back of the engine bay?
If it is this, is a re-weld the only way to fix it?
What if its the exhaust bracket?
-
Get a trusted friend to sit in the car and give it a rev while you listen.
If its a heat shield just rip it off. Thats what iv done.
If its the rubber mount i think you can get another. if its the bracket its self you need a welder i think.
-
Get under the car and have someone start it, see if you can locate the source. if its the exhaust bracket, just grab a new one from GSF or eurocarparts. If its the heat shield, you can either get someone to put a couple of weld spots next to the broken ones, try bodging it with some exhaust sealant paste, or just rip the heat shield off altogether (just don't park on tall dry grass when the exhaust is hot  )

... or just rip the heat shield off altogether (just don't park on tall dry grass when the exhaust is hot  )
So is the heat shield located between the cat and the road?
I thought the heat shield would be above the cat, so it would be between the exhuast and the underneath of the car?
-
I think all heat shields are above the pipe bolted onto the botom of the body. Also there may be one round your turbo.

it surrounds the cat

Cheers for the help guys. Anyone got a photo of the underside of a Mk4 1.8T?
Will have to check it out, might just rip the damn thing off.
Seems like I have lots of little problems going on with my car at the moment, whatever happened to ...
"if only everything in life was as reliable as a volkswagen"
But then to be fair, it is reliable, the problems are only really annoying - rather than stopping me from getting from A to B!
-
I think there may also be a shield above the centre box aswell as the cat.
-
im sure the heat shields run most of the way along the zorst ill get a pick tom as my car will be up on the ramps for new wheels thats if u still need it
-
Cheers mate, that would be good. I wont be able to check mine till next weekend I dont think, so pics would be much appreciated.
-
I dont have my heatshield on mine and havent for 2 years and there hasnt been a problem, if thats the thing thats making the noise get rid of it
-
Cheers for the help guys, as I say, will look into next weekend as I am busy this week, and will let you know. I think it could be the heat-shield as its seems a bit intermittent/based on temp of the exhaust maybe.
-
yer the heat shield does go all the way on my car any way heres the pics not all that good but it might help

After all this...I finaly got the car onto a ramp (was having the tyres changed) and managed to check what the noise was.
Surprise surprise.......it was the centre exhaust bracket. The garage that services it must have tried to fix it by putting a jubilee clip round the exhaust and the tightening it round the broken bracket. It was this clip that had come free and was now sliding around on my exhaust, and rattling like mad!
I got the guy to rip it off, and will try to get the broken bracket welded again when I go back for the two rear tyres next month.
Was surprised to see that the original exhaust still looks in very good shape having covered 103k+ miles! I was waiting for it to fail before going for a Milltek, but looks like I might be waiting a long time for that one!
Cheers for all the help anyway guys.
