Title: vw badge (sorry!)
Post by: SteveS on 30 January 2008, 19:23
i emailed vwspeed about the vw front emblem as wanted to see their price and its not on their site. they told me they dont stock them, but on the website it says they can get everything pretty much so contact them..

i got this reply

"We can source them as we don't stock them.
On the parts database there are 3 different front VW emblems for the Mk5 Golf.
They all have the same colour code but none is designated as being for the GTI.
There is a Chrome / Anthracite one, one for GT and another for the R32. "

does it make sense to anyone? i thought the mk5s were the same? anyone got a partnumber for the gti front vw emblem so i can tell them!?

....I can also confirm that the stock GTI silver VW badge is 1T0 853 601 - I've got one on my desk because I swopped it for a carbonfibre one

....That pic was taken a while ago and when the car was dirty. I simply noticed the nice lighting and took the pic anyway.

I bought a spare badge that I'm experimenting with. Gloss black didn't work to well as it was very shiny, worse than the chrome. So I have some Satin black which I am going to try this weekend.

....Satin Black should work quite well. The black badges on earlier Mk GTI's were more like satin finish. Also, the Mk5 R32 tail pipe trim is satin black.

There seems to be a tradition for black VW badges on GTI's but I don't know the history of this.
Title: Re: vw badge (sorry!)
Post by: Komenda on 31 January 2008, 19:22
A guy named Franz Reimspiess and Nikolai Borg designed the stacked badge as we know it today, Reimspiess was also the man who refined the original Beetle engine, a car whose body construction was developed by Erwin Komenda.. Prior to this the Peoples Car logo was in fact the Swastika which the VW logo is said to mimic at certain rotational speed. (urban legend) The badge was originally found in a cog like design which was dropped along with the Swastika. A version with the Wolsfburg logo also existed around this time.

No idea about the black badge though

Sorry for the history lesson, I'm a big Porsche (VW) fan.
Title: Re: vw badge (sorry!)
Post by: RedRobin on 31 January 2008, 19:28
....Thanks, Komenda, I found that all very interesting. I've seen the swastika within a cog wheel but a long time ago and didn't know it was representing VeeDub

well i emailed the guy with the part number and got this:

Quote
Stephen,
The part number you have given us is an old number which has been superseded by another, as we're not a VW dealer we don't have access to supersession part numbers.

Mike
VWS

??? he cant find the part number for the GTI.. surly it would be a simple bloody thing to do?

How much did you guys pay for the front VW badge in grill from the dealers?

EDIT: Just rang dealer and he has dozens in stock. £15.26 incl VAT. Going to pick one up this weekend

How easy is it to remove and replace?
Title: Re: vw badge (sorry!)
Post by: Komenda on 20 February 2008, 17:10

Just twist it a quarter turn to the left and pull, comes off easy.

....That satin black looks a great match with the black nose mask. Looks great!

I would live with the silver GTI badge for a while before deciding, but my thoughts are to leave it silver most likely. Otherwise, where do you stop!?

did you take the VW silver bit off the plastic bit to do it? or spray the whole thing?

NO point just rubbed it down with some 800grit wet and dry to get rid of the shine and then did one coat and used hair dryer to dry and then another and job done

I'd use the same red as that of the red lipstick around the grill

I've just purchased a silver GTi and would love to fit a black VW badge to the grill.

However as I'm not particularly practical now that DIY paintiing would not produce good results for me.

Does anyone know anywhere I can purchase a pre-painted black or carbon fibre badge?

Thanks
Title: Re: vw badge (sorry!)
Post by: SteveS on 25 February 2008, 20:49
you cant get a prepainted one unless someone sells theirs on ebay or somin, the CF ones are in USA i think and cost a bomb!

just paint it. scrup down with some wet and dry, and spray a few layers.. done

Some better pictures for you guys.

Just took the car out then to take these pictures at a quiet location and traffic was busy. I alot of people were staring at it. It certainly draws more attention now!
I didnt think it would suit a black car but it looks tidy!

Looks really great with dimmers and foggys on aswell. It really draws the attention to the red lipstick and GTI badge more now.

joesgti:  I paid £13 at my local dealer for the front badge.
Russ.C: You have to twist the original badge to the left to take it out. Its a pain and i broke the clips of mine. However, the new one was easy to put in - it just clips in.
Im not really bothered about snapping the clips of the original badge as i wount be using it anymore and if i ever do need it again its just a £13 so nothing to worry about.

The rear VW badge will be alot harder to do as its not like the front. Its all one concave piece. Im leaving it for the time being.

....It looks even better on a black car than I thought it would - Very distinctive - Still says "VW" but looks meaner. As said before, some of the earlier Mk GTI's had black badges - It's a Golf GTI tradition!!

Could this be the start of something?????, hopefully it still looks as good when the paint weathers abit.
Im not so sure?. Red GTi badge would look good i think, but im a chrom luver i have to admit.
Title: Re: vw badge (sorry!)
Post by: maxamus on 27 February 2008, 08:49
I dont think a red badge would look that good. I think with the red lipstick around the grill and a red badge would be red overload. I think black looks better because still stands out but does not take away from the original features of the grill (the red lipstick and gti chrome badge).

I had a proper look at mine this morning and it certainly makes the front end of the car more chunky and sporty looking. Now the red lipstick around the grill stands out alot more which is a good i think as it makes the GTI alot more noticable from a distance and it certainly attracts more attention.

And, i wouldnt go for a really dark shade of black. I went for a really dark shade of grey (as shade as grill). I think a really dark grey or eveb jet black would not look so good as then the VW would not be as clear and just make it look like a big black circle in the grill.

not my find, credit goes to joesgti, but thought it might be a good link posted here, black front badges for sale, £25 inc P&P. I'm going to buy one, for the sake of £25 it saves me the trip to halfords and painting myself! Sweet find Joe!!

The rear badge is not the GTI one though - the GTI has a smooth rear VW symbol, other models have the embossed VW badge.

Anyway, £25 is not bad but I was thinking about buying a few and getting my local smart repairer to paint them all in one go, sure if I got a few done then it would be cheaper.
