Title: How in he11 do i do this?
Post by: Helios_Blue_Valver on 29 March 2004, 14:48
Alright. One of my mates comes in today telling me that he just serviced his 1998 passat 1.8T with a 5 speed automatic tranny. He told me how he changed the oil and his car had been smoking since. I went out and checked the oil, about 2 1/2 inches over full. wow. I asked him to show me where he drained the oil at. Turns out he drained the Tranny. That would account for the drivability problems he is having. Thank God he didn't drive it far.  :o Now the question of the day is this. Where do you add oil to the transmission? This is the first auto box i have seen with out a dipstick so i can't even check it, or add oil. Been all over under it to no avail. Anyone ever played with one of these? Got me a bit stumped. I called VW in Bury St. Edmunds hoping for some advice and came to the conclusion that they are useless. Explained the situation and asked how to check the fluid and was told that they would have to put it on the machine to read it through the computer. Sounds to me like they are just after a stack of pound notes.

Anyone?

Peace,
Brad

Are you sure there isn't a dip-stick for it. My 1991 Audi has auto transmission and  that has a dipstick. Its quite well buried in the engine.

100% sure mate. VW admitted to that even. lol. I had the engine cover off even thinking it might be hidden under there. Apparantly this transmission is a big secret on servicing. According to a specialists garage near me they don't even know how to properly service them.  Won't be taking anything there i guess. I don't think I will ever be buying a new car with an automatic tranny. :) Really glad this isn't my car.

There must be a manual way of checking the level.........I can't believe that VW would design a gearbox where the oil level could only be checked by chucking a computer at it.

Where do you fill the gearbox up? Is that not a fill and level plug like the mk1 and mk2 manual gearboxes?

I'm reinstalling my ETKA (I accidently deleted it whilst installing Windows XP on another partition), when thats loaded I'll have a look in there..........see if that sheds any light.

Found this, looks like you fill the box from underneath through a plug in the pan, looks like the diff uses a different oil supply also.
Steve.
1) Remove drain plug. Drain ATF. Install NEW seal on drain
plug, install and tighten to 30 ft lbs. (40 N.m).
2) Remove ATF inspection plug. Using ATF Fill System (VAG
1924), carefully insert fill hose through an opening in the deflector
cap. See Fig. 2. Ensure deflector cap is not pushed out of position.
Fill until ATF runs out of inspection hole.
3) Shift selector lever into park position. Start engine.
Press and hold brake pedal. Shift through all selector lever positions
with vehicle stationary. Shift to park position. Check fluid level.
Add as necessary.
