Hey guys, thinking of getting some of these H4 bulbs for my lights (think cars with slightly blue tinged lights stand out).
My dad said that it is hard to get the lights adjusted properly after fitting new bulbs, is this true? I think he may have been making it sound harder to stop me wasting my money on useless stuff

Cheers for any advice and such
-
i was looking into buying these as well so would be interested in the answer to
-
Your dad speaks with forked tongue, the bulbs do not affect the positioning of the light!
-
the bulbs are all located, i.e. they only go in one way.
Oh and it's the light unit that moves to affect the beam direction. Not the bulb.
-
blue bulbs will make your already crap mk2 lights emit even less useful light. The human eye responds better to yellow light than blue light (think street lamps vs. blue lamps in public toilets/late night buses)
get some "all weather" 100W bulbs, they emit yellow light with a hint of purple!
-
Sweet cheers guys, i know they won't be as good as yellow ones but think they look cool even in the day
Eventually (maybe next week depending on the pay situ.) im going to get crystal head lights which will help with the light output (I think!)
-
i've got these in my car, with crystal ones, and the performance has only got better if you ask me, much better especially with my crystal head lights.
next thing on the list is uprated wire loom. roll on summer! cant wait to lose my placement job so i can spend weekdays working on the car!
-
Sweet cheers for that mate, looks like ill defo be getting some and crystals along the line!
The plan is, big bumpers and debadged grill with crystals, oh so original i know but i like that look!
-
et some "all weather" 100W bulbs
Please don't. They're not legal and bloody inconsiderate to other road users.
Instead of dicking about with all of these pony modifications why not save money and set up a relay controlled lighting loom. This will give you much better light output from standard bulbs.
-
its not called dicking about...its called wasting money on our mk2 lovers.
its what other men do for their g/f's or wives...or in some cases, both.
-
Make that comparison and what you're talking about here is the equivilent of buying your other half some council gold from H. Samuels or similar - she won't thank you for it and it'll make her look like a cheap tart.
The headlight loom upgrade on the other hand is like unexpectedly buying t'other half a dishwasher when she didn't have one before - you'll both benefit from it and get more quality time together as a result.
-
Well ive brought them anyway, fitting a new loom seems to much hard work so ill go with the easy mods to begin with!
-
Remember, kids - if something's hard, then it's probably not worth doing.

hahaha love it!
i agree with dec and diamond..each their own init!
i wana do my loom also, but i only really drive for like 3 hours tops at night so aint in no rush, got some super white bulbs in the mean while...
-

I have those exact bulbs - they do give off a brighter light and make night driving easier! I also have had the H7s in my other car they also give an improvement.
BUT you musy get an uprated loom the difference is amazing!
-
I thought that the loom was going to be to much work too but a couple of weeks ago i was on my way back from taking my theory in hasting (got 48 out 50 by the way OOOO YES!!) and it was dark and i could not see any thing i was driving from the lights of the people behind!! and i nearly drove off the road 4 times cos i could not see!!! So becuase off this extremly scary experiance it made me buy new head light looms as i could not drive like that!!! And can i just say WOOOOOOOOOWW it has been THE best thing i have done!!! It is not hard to fit if you get ones that come with instructions of ebay. It took about 2 hours to fit (I took my time to make sure it was all right) but it was well worth it!!!! Plus with Xeon bulbs it makes it even better!!!

my point was, if that was his inspiration, he's not going to achieve that look with a set of bulbs.
-
pedestal
-
so is speeding as are a number of other things.
Yes, but the nice thing about speeding is that it goes away when you take your foot off the gas.
HIDs and 100W bulbs, much like german plates, do not.
Quite what pedestals have to do with it I have no idea.
-
i had these in my mk1 for a bit in my crystal head lights, they are cheap bulbs and the beam cast is poor and the light seems fuzzy if that makes scence? :undecided: also gave a sh!t blue look to the lights when off so kind of looked chav, binned them and got some philips extreme (which i now use in the vr and the bora) bulbs which are the best bulbs i have ever used! (and i have been through loads of bulbs! lol)
oh might be worth getting a up-rated loom too as you have a mk2 with candle power looms!
-
I havent had a problem with my lights though  I know they arent as good as other cars but ive only driven mine at night. Theres only one country lane i really have to go down to get to my house aswell so its not the end of the world
Also having the 4 lights for main beam it makes everything ok anyways
he has retro fitted HID units though.....
Cheers for clearing that up  Nevermind didnt pay the world so if they truely are crap i can chuck them
-
so these looms can be bought off ebay?
-
yup
-
made a world of difference on my old mk1

Ok a lot of sh1te going round at the minute about HID's. They're not illegal per se - but they may fail the MOT, that and people you dazzle will hate you. Because they don't use filaments they don't produce the same distribution of light and as it hits your lens' it'll get focused the wrong way - exactly like wearing someone elses glasses. They can also suffer from colour differentiation issues etc.
Also bear in mind that 6500K is colour temperature and says nothing about how bright they'll be.
-
There's nothing going on around HIDs.
Aftermarket kits are illegal - end of story. Here is the factsheet from the Department for Transport (http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps).
It states quite clearly that:
In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.
and the rules you need to comply with are as follows:
1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.
2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.
3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.
The key bit really is this:
Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.
So unless you're installing headlamp washers and self-levellers as well as replacing the headlamp unit COMPLETE with one designed and E-marked for your application then they are illegal and by buying, installing and using them you are breaking the law. - No need for the last bit. ta.
-
Philips extreme and a Relay Loom FTW! Makes so much difference. The lights on my daily are better than the Mrs' Audi A3, no joke.
-
Oh right! Well there you go, they are illegal. Usually Irish laws (where I am) for stuff like this emulates what you have over there, so I assumed it was the same.
-
These lights came yesterday, fitted them this morning (was out all yesterday) and they look great IF... i unplug my sidelights
Decided im going to get some 'xenon white' led sidelights now as well! the H4's look great as theyre white with a slight blue aswell (not overpoweringly blue
Shame they're gonna look yellow till later or Monday!
Recommend them to anyone personally!
-
nah keep the yellow bulb!, then band a bult into your indicatiors, double side lights! looks smart imo, well, its getting done on mine when i get the new healight looms from ebay...
front of my car is gonna look like blackpool tower!
-
