Title: Heater Matrix replacement check list...
Post by: Andy Jeffries on 30 January 2008, 10:44
Ok..after getting a quote of £280 to replace my heater matrix I am going to give it a go myself so I've printed off the guide and I'm going to read that for a few weeks before I rip my lovely car apart..anyways...need to make sure I have everything I need before I start so please help complete my list....

1. Genuine VW heater matrix....

Thats all I have on my list at the moment...is that the only part that I technicaly need to replace?

My back up plan is a little 12v car heater but would like to get to know my iccle Mk2 inside out so really wana just bite the bullet and give it a go!

Cheers all :)

- antifreeze and water (for top-ups afterwards)
- spanners/screwdrivers
- a little pot for putting all the screws/clips

oh and...

- plasters (because you will slice your hands!)
- patience (a lot of patience!)

if i were you id get hold of some thin foam and double sided carpet tape to put on the various doors inside your heater box. the original foam will more than likely be totally knackered and/or gone.

replacing this will mean air will only blow in the direction you ask it to using the controls rather than every possible orfice. OPPS!

either get some jubilee clips to refit the heater matrix hoses afterwards or one of those tools that compresses the spring clamps easily as they are a total cock otherwise.

good luck

^^^ yeah I did the matrix on my a plater at the weekend and I now know where all the large chunks of foam that were billowing out of my vents came from!!!
I used duck tape on all the control flaps putting it on both sides so it would stick to itself through all the round holes in the flaps. Seems to have worked pretty well, really enjoying the heat!!!

Hi
While your memory is still fresh, can you please draw the two flaps for me.

check out the mk2 maintenance and info section.........clipper jay did a superb pictorial which i followed. there are some pics on there.

would be a proper pain in the arse to draw a pic and for you to be able to visuallise acurately!!!! well im not an artist anyway.

just get some foam and some double sided carpet tape/duck tape and all will become apparent when its removed

do a search for bypass valve, it probably needs bypassing or replacing.

Can't believe its £280 for a garage to do a matrix!
