Ok people its another "can't get reverse gear" problem.
I've had a quick look for a sticky and had no luck, i know its there just cant find it !
Here's the problem. Absolutely NO Reverse gear on my 16v Mk2
I've tried manually selecting it from the engine bay by pulling the selector on the box towards me and fully to the right but still no joy, it just keeps selecting first.
Not a bushing problem!?!
So i'm guessing its an internal Gearbox problem ?????
Got another gearbox on 8v mk2 standing by just dont want to swap it over for no reason.
Also does anyone know if u can just swap an 16v Gearbox for an 8v ??
Any correction to my guess work or redirection to a relevant sticky would be greatly appreciated !!!!

Have you done anything to the gear linkages recently? This happened to me when I didn't re-align them properly once. There's a thread in the maintenance section about it.

Thanks for the reply...
Haven't done anything to the linkages, i know they could do with a refurb, but i attempted to select the gear directly from the lever exiting the gear box itself.... it still would only select first gear. so i'm guessing its a problem inside the gear box and want to replace it with one from an 8v GTI... just not sure if it will go straight on my 16v???

The gear shift repair thread is here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33100.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33100.0)
100% make sure the linkage is ok before you swap the gear box! You'd be gutted otherwise!!
The gearbox will swap over easy enough, there is something about clutch splines i think that needs sorting. If you have a search you should find an answer.

Yeah i think i will do that first just to be sure and humour myself. thanks mate.
