when i turn my controls on my mk2 golf gti there is like steam or smoke coming threw the vents could any one please tell e what this is because off im guessing the heater blower as nothing blows and no stages 1 2 or 3 be a big help thanx carl also sorry is the handbrake easy to connect up back onto the leverside and is there 1 or 2 cables its a 1986 gti rear discs cheers all

Not sure about your blowers mate, does your engine smoke at all?
I changed my hand brake cable on my Driver with drum brakes, pretty easy, just don't forget to clip the cable back into place. Invest in a Haynes manual  Helps a lot!

no no smoke from engine but the vents allow smoke or steam through wen i turn the heaters on any one got any idea on the cable all i need is to connect it on to the lever in the car cheers all

steam/smoke sounds like steam coming from a leaking heater matrix.... (radiator looking thing behind the dash and a pain to change) i take is this steam/smoke only appears once the engine has warmed up? unlikely to be smoke from the engine without the blower working.
No power from the blower is prob a blown fuse... or broken blower which is top left of passenger footwell.
hope it helps....

yea vert true its when i have the engine running but if i leave it running without the blowers on no steam or smoke even after an hour as soon a si turn them on even for 5 seconds a few seconds later it starts to slowly come through the vents is this still the matrix or blower cheers sorry for being a bit stupid but im stuck. whats the best way to fix this cost of matrix to fix or just a change of blower for 20 pound of fleabay cheers all

Ok i'm a little confused. I'm assuming u have no blower action at all? i.e no air blowing through the vents.
if this is true check the fuse first then the wiring at the switch and then the wiring on the blower itself.
A voltage meter is handy if u know how to use one otherwise visual inpection will have to do.
If the blower works on one of the settings like the highest for instance, then its either the switch (but unlikey) its more likely to be a knackered blower.
steam/smoke. Definately leaning toward steam i'm afraid. Which mean moisture is getting into the vents. From my experience this it the matrix leaking and i'm pretty sure its a common problem for mk2's. To replace the matrix u have to remove the dash to access it, which is a pain and long process....
GSF do a matrix for about 20 quid. But its gonna cost a bit to get it fitted cos i'm guess a few hours to fit.

That guide is Great ! i've used it before.

yes mate i dont get any of the settings on the controls no noise or air blowing but no steam comes through inless i turn them on so is that the matrix
-
Hmmmmm...
This sounds very strange.
If it is actually smoke, it would be the blower burning out. But the fuse should pop and thus the smoke should have stopped.
Also u should be able to tell if its smoke cos u would smell it !
So i'm sticking with steam/water vapour from a leak in the heating system, and the most likely culprit would be the matrix.
If ur anywhere near south london i could have a look for ya.

no sorry mate miles away in shropshire im going to a have a good look at weekend im so hoping it is smoke as a new blower would be alot less work and money thanx for everything

You can get steam coming from the vents if the drainage holes under the bonnet at the top get clogged up with leaves etc, causing water to drip through to the blower. Worth a look.
