Title: Help needed - R32/Ed30 rear valance on GTI....
Post by: RedRobin on 29 January 2008, 15:59
I'm wanting to change the rear valance on my Milltek quadded Mk5 GTI.

Currently it has the Abt rear which was the only one available way back in 2005 - Here's a pic:

As you can see, I have colour coded Mk5 R32 sides and the 'upper' rear valance of either the R32 or the Ed30 (which look identical) match the sides well.

I want to fit an OSIR carbonfibre 'lower' valance but with a R32/Ed30 'upper' and not with the smooth one shown in this pic:

So, can anyone confirm that either Ed30 or the R32 'upper' will fit the GTI, please? I've seen pics of GTI's with R32 rears and even R32 exhaust layouts but only in the U S of A.

Many Thanx,
RR, Da Double R

If we both report here what info we find, it'll be useful for each of us and others interested.

I've already got the OSIR cf front splitter (and cf bonnet and mask and VW logo!). Riso is now bringing out a central splitter cf variant - It's on his web site.

So far, speed bumps are alright but some very steep drives with a camber change need very careful negotiation - Always go across the slope at an angle rather than straight down and dig into a pavement!

that isnt the same front splitter as the one i have seen, its the same back but obv not for 4 tails (just 2) i cant look now as i finish work in about 10 mins but from what i have seen so far the rear should fit the bottom of a std gti rear bumper, the colour coding the surround, or the whole think but my car is black so i would leave it with the CF look.

aha.....i just read again, your wanting the upper as ed30/r32, so you would not need to colour code it

Hi RR,

Ed 30 upper valance does fit the standard GTI. Awesome sell them and even the example pic is in red.

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/vw%20golfmk5/styling.html

I believe the OSIR carbonfibre rear is a "stick-on" mod rather than a replacement though.

....Thanks, Hurdy

My workshop would probably be able to get the part cheaper than Awesome (they are looking into it too) and as they are a large Accident Repair Centre they probably can get just the upper part I need. But it's good to know it's all possible.

The OSIR cf part is def not 'stick-on' but I know uses a slot and 3 screws (TTshop got an email for me from Riso about it this morning).

I've now found this too: A R32 rear on a GTI:

Ah, I see.

I was looking on the website and it said fits over valance, so naturally (and wrongly :embarassed:) thought it fitted over the lower valance.

....A totally natural assumption but with the words "fits directly onto the factory rear bumper", he means onto the actual bumper and not the 'lower' valance section - Clarified by what the white GTI pic is exposing.

As it looks like a diffuser, do you know if it actually does give any extra downforce?

....An interesting question but I don't know the answer. I would have thought that any difference would be minimal. The OSIR cf roof spoiler might have more effect but looks OTT in my opinion unless it's a track car.
Title: Re: Help needed - R32/Ed30 rear valance on GTI....
Post by: Hurdy on 29 January 2008, 22:49
The Clio has a rear diffuser instead of a roof spoiler and Renault say that it gives as much downforce as having a roof spoiler. The Clio diffuser doesn't look that much different either as it doesn't stretch under the floor pan. :undecided:

....That's good to learn. A bonus .

By the same token, I wonder what difference my OSIR front splitter makes aerodynamically. A while ago when I was at Ray West's I met a guy there using the workshop  who used to work with Williams F1 specialising in wind tunnel stuff. He told me that every single bodywork change could make a difference.

I would think its true....i remember reading that mirrors on the Ferrari F430 were designed to create that little bit more downforce and to help direct wind straight into the vents at the back for the little engine....quite impresive if you really think about it....

....I reckon that any downforce increase would only come into play at speeds over about 120 mph on the autobahns etc. I have found that at more than about 135 mph (GPS reading) the car feels much lighter. But how much downforce only 2 vertical baffles would create, I wouldn't know.

The downforce would be created by the angle and length of the diffuser. The baffles are there to aid a linear air flow to up the downforce :nerd:

Thanks for teaching me something about car aerodynamics, Hurdy

Meanwhile my very helpful and friendly VW dealer has been looking up parts and can supply me with just the upper part instead of having to buy the whole rear valance, and for almost one third of what Awesome would charge!! The 'lower' part is called a 'tail pipe trim' and the upper part is called a 'spoiler' but not a roof spoiler.

is that for the ed30 upper, what price will he do it for as I would be interested in one aswell and may give a small discount if you got 2. also do they come pre sprayed to the colour of your car, as when ordering parts from my subaru dealer i found that there was no spraying involved as parts were sent from the factory pre sprayed.

Also my local dealer really is a stealer and quoted 60pounds more than awesome.

Hi Joe,

The part we were investigating this morning is the Mk5 R32 part # 1K6 807 433 C GRU (which looks identical to the Ed30 but I can't yet guarantee it's exactly the same re fixings) - It's called a "spoiler" and will cost me £138.20+vat (approx £160). It comes primed ready to paint.

The R32's lower part, available separately, is called a "tail pipe trim" # 1K6 807 568 9B9 and comes Satin Black and is obviously only appropriate for the R32 exhaust configuration. Costs £73.63+vat.

I'm already being given favours on the overall job and cannot reasonably expect any further discount from buying two. Surely all VW dealers charge customers the same prices for parts but may individually give discount or not.

My dealer's bodyshop always carefully matches paint to each individual car - Very much preferred!!

Slightly off topic but relevant in some form.
Im looking at changing my rear valance (MY55 GTI) so that its like the R32. Apart from getting the R32 rear valance i would also need to change my exhaust system so that its like that of the R32 configuration.

Which companies manufacture such a system?
Cost?

....The part numbers and costs for the Mk5 R32 rear components are in my previous post.

Contact Milltek 01332 227 280 and ask them about the exhaust.

It seems that I now have a choice between....

R32-style:

GTI-style:

I'm spoilt for choice but the R32-style is easier to obtain. Cost difference is negligible.

To give any sort of noticeable down force you would also need a venturi under the car to compress and speed up the airflow.

I've made my final choice and ordered the parts. R32 spoiler + OSIR CF tail pipe trim. I think it looks much more OEM and subtle [ Since when are quad exhausts subtle? I hear you say! ]

Obviously I'll post pics when ready in a few weeks.

Sorry if I seem to have got lost in all this... so we are saying the R32 rear spoiler will fit the standard GTI bumper but if your keeping the twin pipes which very bottom but do you need or does the standard GTI very bottom bit still fit the R32 rear spoiler?

 :undecided:

Do like the R32 rear spoiler but obivoulsy I dont have quad outlets.  Let us know how easy this is to fit - assume the whole bumper comes off to swap the spoiler section.

RedRobin, Where did you get the CF VW logo and front bumper insert?

the R32 rear spoiler and ED 30 rear spoiler both fit the std gti but the ed30 exhaust trim does not detatch from the spoiler whereas the r32 and std gti exhaust trims are removable so carbon fiber replacments are available for these two spoilers.

carbon fiber replacments are available for 2exhausts (std) and 4 exhausts (robins)

i think

I assume you mean my CF front mask around the upper grill when you say "front bumper insert". If so, it's an OSIR part via the TTshop.

....Hi Joe,

The other fog panel is cut out too. The story is that on the very early Mk5 GTI's VW thought that they needed extra cooling to the DSG radiator. But they later discovered that it was ineffective and it wasn't needed anyway. Fischer Motorsport in Germany have continued to offer them for sale as aftermarket. Imo they look better because the solid panels look imitation grills.

I don't know if they are still available.

I called Justin at the TTshop today and explained my situation.

After a bit of humming and heying and looking at some pics, he told me that an OSIR GTI carbon fibre valance will NOT fit on an R32 rear spoiler.  The R32 rear valance clips onto the bumper - but the GTI one wont have the clips to fit.
He thinks the GTI one is designed to be stuck ontop of the existing one - but cant confirm.
He did offer to order me an R32 spoiler in and they would try fitting the GTI valance there - so save sending it to me if it didnt fit.  I would only need to pay a £15 or so restocking fee for the spoiler if I didnt need it.

Looks like I'm just going to have to wait for an Ed30 spoiler with built on valance...

Looks like it may be a bit of a bonus for me then . I suspected that the CF would be a stick on part over the existing section as I mentioned to RR. I'll be taking my chances on it in any event. If they can't fit it onto the existing ED30 section then I will buy what I need and fit myself anyway.
All I need to do now is break the news to them (gently) that they will have to re-site my reverse camera

just looked on the osir site and above the rear c/f picture it says "HIGHLY RECOMMAND ~ PUR-Adhesive Sealant for external parts and spoiler BY BETALINK"  i think this is the glue.

it clearly glues onto the back of a gti exhaust trim, i dont think it will glue on ed30 though,

Robin,

Looking very smart, much more stealthy.

I’m hoping to paint/replace my 'tail pipe trim' and I’m looking for clues from you guys.
Are we positive that the ED30 trim is not removable?

cheers... Hotrod

the trim that fits around the exhausts on an ed30 looks like its removable, when a dozy bint crashed into the back of mine i got a good look at how its attatched. it looks like it just clips in. its sitting in the boot at the repair center as i type this

I have an ed30 bumper sitting in my spare bedroom at the moment and can confirm it is one piece. There is no way of splitting it

New tyres on the back there RR?

....Thanks, guys

Tyres not new but lasting well on the back.

I'm really pleased with the new rear - Looks far more OEM and also more 'business-like'. The Milltek pipes fit much more snugly into the OSIR carbonfibre trim.

It would be very risky to colour paint the black reversing sensors without first removing them - Not worth the effort. Paint could easily interfere with the sensor rings.

I think I have finally finished my body mods! (apart from rear VW badge lock in CF) - Famous last words?

Digging up an old thread here as this mod interests me..

Red, I really like your rear

If I was to get hold of an R32 spoiler (the piece with the reflectors) but wanted to retain the stock GTI exhaust configuration then what are my options?  I'm not bothered about carbon fibre parts.  From reading the previous posts I think the GTI exhaust trim will not fit the R32 spoiler, correct?

....Hi Clive,

The Mk5 R32 'spoiler' (piece with reflectors) has various cut outs for different Mk5 exhaust configurations (I'll see if I can post a pic later). It's then a matter of fitting an 'exhaust trim' to suit yours. Mine is carbon to suit quads. I know that OSIR do a carbon to suit central R32 pipes but not sure offhand about where a GTI twin-pipe trim piece could be sourced whether carbonfibre or not.

You're right that the stock GTI exhaust trim won't fit the R32 spoiler. VW didn't follow through their designed cut-outs very well!

Thanks RR, I was hoping that the stock GTI exhaust trim would fit the R32 spoiler but you have confirmed that this is not the case :(  Don't worry about posting the pic as there is one earlier in this thread showing the R32 rear fitted to a GTI without any exhaust trim attached.

To do this right I would have to upgrade to a Milltek with either twin dual pipes (like yours) or R32 style pipes which is going to work out quite expensive...

....Correct

The money all adds up quite quickly! However, I know Milltek very well and their support is second to none. Their aircraft-quality stainless steel are lifetime (of your ownership) guaranteed and maintenance free. Even without other mods such as a remap, their Cat-back will improve throttle response and make a very enjoyable but tasteful sound. But beware! Because that's simply how I started!! £££££ later................

RR everyone says Milltek's Customer Services are second to none, but what I don't get in this.

1. that they state you have a lifetime guarantee only if you are the original owner.  Surely its their product they are guaranteeing and NOT the ownership of it;

2. tried mailing them about some tailpipe (internal) discolouration and the mail via the web page is not recognised. Reddish brown inside the tailpipe, almost as if dechromed...wait it is dechromed slightly.  Will post pics if its bright enough tomorrow, though forecast looks bleak.

Not overly concerned about any lack of performance, its just that it looks a little...err shabby?

I have been lazy though, I will contact them by phone tomorrow or Monday and see if they can help.

1 - Think of it this way: Their brand new product is fitted onto your car and hence it has a warranty but rather than just 3 years it has a lifetime warranty which belongs to your car and not to you or any future owner. It is the product which is being guaranteed but while it's on and becomes a settled component of the first car it's fitted to. Sorry, it is tricky to understand.

2 - A phone call should find them very helpful. Any problems about that, PM me with the details coz I knows people! :afro:

hmmm thinks...right...I think i get it, the part as warrantied as long as its fitted to the original car that it was fitted to, ? No matter, I love the milltek exhaust top class bit of kit. Leave it until I post separately tomorrow.

I will post some pics to save hijacking this one tomorrow (weather permitting), and also contact Milltek by phone. I am sure that they will offer some advice. Perhaps it wasnt looked after by a previous owner (not mark_eire) he didnt have it long enough.

It makes no functional difference to car, its only cosmetic, but dont we all love our cosmetics to look nice?

thanks for the offer RR, see what you reckon when I post the pic, but I am sure they will look at it reasonably sympathetically, I mean the car is only 3 years old today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY GORGEOUS! xx so I the pipes must be less than that I would hazard.

....I'm thinking that they'll still support you even if you're not the first owner. Depending on what's needed you may have to visit their works in Derby though. I'm sure they'll want to help you but, as I say, PM me if any problems - Not that I can guarantee a satisfactory solution.

Btw, they do have the word "Milltek" engraved on the top of each pipe don't they?

Yep Milltek is engraved in the top of each pipe. I give them a wee clean each weekend, just to make them look as good as the rest of the car :D Will post a few pics later, but I won't be able to get to Derby...waaaay too far just now.

Having owned a millitek for my mk4 gti auq, i can say they are a good manu of exhausts.
But i think quality has slipped since then so much that i would think twice before buying one.
I am currently looking at the German Co - Remus. They do a 90mm tailpipe for the ED30 and the quality looks good as i have seen a Remus fitted to Audi A5.They also do the R32 quad pipes too.Failing that its a one of custom design from a co in Ayrshire  http://www.meercat-exhausts.com/index.htm used by the late Colin Mcrae.

I've heard from a friend on the Audi TT forum that loads of people have been having problems with rust/corrosion of their Milltek exhausts (yes, quite unbelievable really), so they are now defaulting to Blueflame exhausts. Although, I took a look at the Blueflame website and wasn't really impressed with their testimonial photos/products and how they presented themselves as a company. Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong if Blueflame are a good, quality product.

....I know that for a while Milltek used ordinary steel just for their fixing brackets but now they use stainless steel, but I'm curious how people are having problems with rust when everything is stainless steel.

Would you please post a link to the Audi TT forum discussion

I haven't actually seen the discussion, when mentioning to my friend that I was going for the Milltek, he then just went on to say that people on the Audi forum have been experiencing problems. I will speak to him and get him to find a discussion about it today.
