righty, found some 16v mk2 hubs im wanting, just gotta take them off my self.
only got an hour to do this 2morrow afternoon, so wat tools will i need.
they have the two bolts on the suspension leg, the two small ones on the ball joint, the track rod ends, and it will need splitting from the drive shaft. but i dont have the tool for splitting the drive shaft from the hub, where can i get this?
what size socksts will i need? guessing i'll need stacks of plusgas too!
cheers in advance,
rob

the hub nut is 30mm, you'll ideally want a 3/4" drive socket and a HUGE breaker bar.
You'll probably need to do it with the wheels on the car with it on the ground and somebody standing on the brakes.
-
ahh... that could be a problem, its in the scrappies and it dont ave wheels... might have to jam a screwdriver down the vent holes on the discs to get the fooker off. sure i have a 30mm socket somewhere :S
the two nuts on the suspension leg? are they 15 or 12 mm? or neither?
im guessing i'll need that tool rubjohnny was on about in another post for splitting the track rod ends off?
cheers, rob

Hmmm if it doesn't have wheels, isn't on the ground and the brakes don't work you'll do well to get it undone without an airgun. Probably easier to split the outer cv joints although then you'll have no hope of getting the nut undone to remove the remaining bit of driveshaft from the hub.
I'm pretty sure the bolts through the bottom of the shocks are 17mm.
-
They are 17mm yes, and what tobz said about the hub nut, you jam a screwdriver in the brake vent and either the brake disc or the screwdriver will break before the nut undoes, trust us on this.
-
I agree,
Hub 30mm I'm sure if use use a decent screw driver in the disc vent and a long lever on the socket you'll be ok.
Susp Legs 17mm. use two though cos the bolt often spins...
Trackrod ??15mm?? but defo use a splitting tool once the nut is off.
goodluck.
-
right guys, got a big decent screw-driver so hopefully should be ok... got a hub splitting too aswell, along with a trac-rod-end splitter thingymabob.
was wondering, what torque are the nuts done upto on a hub?
-
265nm!!! good luck
-
holf mother of mary! well, its a good big screwdriver and i have a pretty big breaker bar... hope i manage it, just need to figire out which was the turn the nut haha!
-
this that valver at jays?
if so , you are mental ! good luck
-
that it is, and why am i mental?
setting off in 10 mins to have a go.
only dedicating an hour to getting them off...
-
you're gonna be upto your elbows in sh!t mate.
the place still hasn't dried out from the floods.
why dont you ask them to angle grind throught the driveshafts, i'm sure they will.
-
i asked em to get them off for me, but since they are shuting up shop and selling off, they are too busy tidying up the yard so he said i have to do it... bit wounded! so am gonna go up now and have a crack myself., the drive shafts have been disconnected and so have the tie rods as far as i can tell, so might just take the hubs and shafts to a mechanic and get them to take the fookers off for me...
-
i didn't know they were shutting  explains why the place looks a bit bare.
time to find a new old skool scrapyard where they let you climb on stuff.
Charlotte motors is ok but they're a bit pricey and that big fook off dog sh1ts me up.
-
well, just spent an hour having a go, didnt even manage to get a single bolt undone. jesus, all of em are so tight.
well, plan B! borrowing my mates dewault(or however u spell it) battery powered grinder, gonna chop through the tie rods, drop the whole suspension leg out and do it like that, take it to motormates and get them to undo everything with an impact wrench.
hope that works!
so thats my lunch 2morrow!
deatons has a few golfs in apparantly, but they are quite a trek tbh...
OH YEAH! jammed my screwdriver in the disc and as predicted, it just bent and the nut didnt even move.
oh well!
-
yeah , deatons have at least 2 .
-
been told they have 3 small bumper models and 1 big bumper model...
although also been told they have been pretty much savaged and stripped of all their virginity.
-
my boss's son ,Mark, goes there quite a bit and he told me weeks ago about 2 coming in so you're probably right.
