just bought a CO gas tester  and am trying Rubjonnys tune up guide. before tampering with anything though ive become a little confused with the instuctions regarding the breather hose on the valve cover.
Rubjonny says
Idle/CO:
1. Get the engine up to temp, at least 80 degrees on the MFA oil temp display
2. Turn the engine off and remove & plug the intake side of the breather pipe between the 'flying saucer' on the rocker cover & air intake
haynes says
disconnect and plug the crankcase breather hose from the valve cover
please could someone clarify what/where exactly i need to plug up.
is it the flying saucer itself or do i leave that open?
or do i plug up the hose or leave it open?
cheers

Haynes book of lies. Your choice.
-
thanks for that slick. you havent answered my question though.
do i plug the hose or the flying saucer? and does the other remain open to the air?
-
I would imagine you want to plug where the air would go into the inlet, so if you take the hose off at the flying saucer then you need to block the hose to stop air going down it into the inlet.
-
kool nice one Mew! thats exactly what i wanted to hear.
-
That isn't 100% definite, but i don't see why it would be done any other way. From what i gather you are stopping any recirculated gases from entering the inlet and throwing out the CO reading. If you didn't block the inlet then there would be air flowing into the throttle body without going through the air flow meter, again throwing out the reading.
That's what i take to be the reasoning behind it, but someone may prove me wrong

sounds logical and i like logical.
when you reconnect the breather hose after the tune up then the CO level in the exhuast gas will be differant? so........... just out of interest do you know the limits for CO on an MOT???
ive not actually had anything to do with an MOT in about 4 years so am quite frankly sh!tting myself as its approaching quickly and ive got a heap of stuff to do!
-
From memory it is something like twice the value of what you set the golf to, so miles off basically!
-
While we are on this subject, if the co is OK, then do you need to bother to disconnect the blue temp, rev etc just to do the idle?
-

Like i said mate, haynes book of lies, just reading it, why would you want to plug the hose that leads away from the inlet.
Jon jons is the correct one.

AH HAAAAA my 8v is now faster!

With regard to the CO2, I was worried about my car taking it in to the local council place, and the guy said as there is no catalyst I don't need to worry about the emissions test. Neither of your cars will have one.
The car flew through, after only needing a CV boot replaced, which was done within 24hrs, that's all I've spent on it since I got it.

my car just had an mot and i had to have an emissions test..failed miserably first time but after playin with the air flow meter we got the co2 down to nothin but the hyrdocarbons shot up, so revved to burn those gases and passed..surely every car cat or not should have emissions tests?
anyways so that guide worked a treat then jammac?? i have still got to do that but i aint got round to it yet :(

oh and where south east you based?
-
im based near in East Grinstead.... near Gatwick airport
yeah worked great you really need a gas tester though to get the best out of it. i did it without a few months back and it seemed to do the trick....lucky i tried the gas tester though before MOT as my car was blowing well over the CO limit 5% and it did smell a little rich.
i thought it was running fine until yestday!

cool well i got a good mate who is a mechanic and he has all that sh!t so guna head over his garage sometime and see how it goes..
good with your mot btw!
