I have recived my new full exhust system and manifold today and have spent 6HOURS!!!! trying to get to old manifold off!!! One of the nut is complety round becuase of rust and it have to get to and the others i cant get to with out getting the inlet manifold off which also will not come off!!! So i have had enough so how much would it cost to have the manifold fited? would quick fit do it or would i have to go to an indipendant garage? I am i Tonbridge Kent if any one could recomend a good garage.

I think theres a specialist tool you can get for rounded nuts cant remember what it was called but there have been posts about them
My local AtS tyre and exhaust fitters would not fit a new manifold only the rest of the system cant be that much labour invovled at a normal
garage.
-
Definately go and see a specialist. Kwik Fit are crap. I contacted Awesome Gti over in Manchester (if you've heard of them) and they quoted between 2-4 hours... and they do that sort of thing every day!
Mine is being fitted on Thursday by my local specialist (Central VW) They're really good guys but i'm bracing myself for an expensive labour bill!

I've looked for these in the past. I couldn't find them in Halfords, B&Q or Homebase.
The only place i know where to get them 'in-store' from is Machine Mart for about £24

My nearest one is in Croydon on the Brighton Road.
Hope this helps.

got some of the irwins saturday to get off those stupid allen key rear carrier bolts. all 4 off within 10 minutes!
-
get yourself a dremel , get under the car & nip of the bolt, 5 mins lovely jubbly
-
I have Got one but theres no room to get it in to cut it off!!!
-
I took the two troublesome nuts off with a dremel - theres not masses of room - but its doable. Only took about 5 mins. Its such a tight space - its a real pita!
-
I could be easyer if i could get the down pipe off how does it come off there are massive clips on it that i tryed to prise off with screw driver and neary broke my finger it will not budge!! is there a tecnique?? i am getting FU**ED OFF with it now!! Please help!!
-
hmm if you look from underneath downpipe to manifold is 4 0r 6 17mm bolts, not sure what clips your trying to take off mate

Sounds like you go the spring clamps on you downpipe, bummer, the edges of the 'C' sit in a slight groove, so just free one side at a time to remove, or if you know someone in a garage they will have access to the tool, sealey and draper both do one, you'll need it to fit it anyway unless you change your downpipe and manifold!
good luck
-
It is all coming off!! Should i just cut it with an angle grinder??
-
OFF! OFF! OFF!
-
Using any sort of pry bar will normally remove the C-clamps. You really shouldn't need to cut them.
If anyone needs to fit them at some point it is possible to use a fanny-stretcher like this:

Just be VERY careful when winding it open - I've use molegrips over each end to get it to that state.
When you've gingerly put the clip in place you only need to give it a tap and the bolt pops out. Be careful though!

Me and my mate had one last go at prising it off with no succuses. So with my mate under the car with some goggles on! (brave i know) and me with angle grinder in hand he drected me where to cut and off it came!!!!!! But that was just the down pipe!! So on we went the round bolt was next on my HIT LIST!!! CUT and that was the end of the bolt!!!! But know theres still the problem of the two last bolts in between the inlet manifold and the top of the exhust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What type of nut size are they or are they the ones which need an super long alen key if so where can i get one??
-
Your manifold-to-head studs should have 12mm peened brass nuts on them. You will find it a lot easier to do the whole lot if you remove the inlet manifold. I know it seems like more hassle, but it will make the overall job a lot easier and you'll be able to tighten things up properly. I presume by the set up you've described you're dealing with a carb motor.
In order to undo all of the studs holding the inlet manifold on you'll need to get a very long 6mm allen key. Alternatively you'll need a 1/4" drive socket, extension bar and socket to suit your bit - probably 8 or 10mm. A mirror and a torch will help you find the offending bolts - they're right in there!
Make sure you replace the peened nuts with equivilent replacements (available from GSF), or they'll come loose again fairly soon.

Do you know a part number or another web site/shop that sells them as i cannot find them?
PS what are Peened nuts??
-
they are a locking nut, like a nyloc but with no nylon to melt, they kind of have a squashed top area where the nyloc would be, any good nut or bolt supplier could get these for you, go to vw, they'll only be pennies.

So that Halfords, B&Q and hombase out the question!!!!!!

Hi my mate took my car i to collage and the alley key bolt rounded off!!  And he cant take it in again till next week!! so i am getting him to come to mine to do it cos he does not get enough time at collage! So i will need to buy the tools to do it so should i get
this
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/96028/Automotive/Sockets-Hex/Irwin-5-Piece-Bolt-Grip-Nut-Remover-Set
or this
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/18643/Drill-Bits/Specialist-Drill-Bits/Screw-Extractor-Set
also would Screw fix sell the peened nuts?
-
-
GSF or VAG will do you fine for the nuts. You should also have the specified washers under them P/N 011 558 11. The nuts are P/N 900 850 01
-
Dremmels? ANGLE GRINDERS?
Spot weld a new nut to the top of the rounded nut and undo it
5 min job
-
1. Dont have welder (wish i did)
2. theres no room
3. The nut is in a crack about 4 inchs deep so could not get a welder in
Lol I regret taking it off now, got my driving test is 2 weeks and nothing to practise in!!!!! hence the need for it to be put on!! but i guess it will be all the sweeter when it is on!!
-
Hmmm
Had to be too simple...
-
a set of irwins will do the nut and the allen screw no probs, money well spent!
