Title: Windscreen wiper switch
Post by: Dream Police on 28 March 2004, 20:48
I have an 89 8v GTI and it doesnt have an intermittent setting on the wiper switch.
Should it have?
I don't know if it is the original switch cos the car was stolen years ago before I bought it so I dont know if it was replaced with the right one.
Anyway I would like intermittent wipers so if I cant get hold of the correct MkII switch, will the switches from the MkIII or even Corrado fit? Will Mk III or Corrado switches have the right gubbins to operate the MFA?

Doesnt move downwards.
Only goes up to speed 1 and up again to speed 2.

the mfa doesnt do the now and average settings tho, the slide switch on the indicator doesnt work. could be related

A tip that I discovered with the mk1's that may well apply to the mk2 too:-

Some of the basic models didn't have intermittent wipers, however, the only reason it didn't work is because a plastic stop was installed into the switch mechanism to prevent the downward movement. Simply remove the switch, remove said stop,  and it should work ;)

It was a while back, but if memory serves me correct it was a white piece of plastic in the switch itself. I have a switch unit handy, I'll take a pic and see if its possible to show you where to look.

I actually have a switch mechanism (removed from an F plate mk2 Golf GTI) for sale on ebay at the moment so I had a picture to hand. I've never had to do it on a mk2 but I have done it on three mk1's and in all cases this is where I removed the baulk to enable intermittent wipers:-

And in case you're interested in the one I have for sale, or just more pictures, here is the ebay URL:-

That's cool rich.
I have the same problem on my 89 16v, most annoying.

I will have a look at it sometime soon.
