Welcome
you sure its a 4 speed, not a 5 speed that has lost its gear? Does it go into fifth gate, or is it just 4 gates plus reverse. Common for 5th to go with shortage of oil!! you can buy a selector repair kit and set up tool from ebay to fix the notchiness.

just 4 gates no 5th to be found but man did i try! i think its off a smaller model cos it seems to be reving to high to get up to decent speed but great 1.4 mile lol

I wouldn't imagine an 8v would have a 4 speed box matey, there is an issue on the mk2 gearbox if you look at the top of the box there are 2 rods with ball sockets on the end, the shorter one is prone to cracking on the ball housing(scrotum>>?? :D) this can stop you been able to get fifth and might explain the hide n seek gears :) think they are pence or pounds rather than 10's from VW dealership or Euro Car Parts, GSF etc :)

but i think i,ll invest 99 squid in a refurbed box with 5 gears i hope, i dont like the sloppy shift on this and i can get into reverse without pushing down.

is it screaming for it's mum at 70? could try lining it back up again and then giving it some grief see if you can get 5th might be there, a gearbox code might help us ID it RJ has them all commited to memory, it'll take him moments!!

You could have a very badly set up gear linkage. You will lose 5th if so. The gear linkage mechanism is behind the engine and is a series of rods. You need a helper and a haynes to set it up properly, but also make sure the ball spacer is present within the linkage, otherwise you will feel like you are stirring a rice pudding with the gearstick.

check my linkage FAQ, I doubt its got a 4 speed box, they are quite rare!  See if you can find 5th from the actual box leaver.  Its common to loose 5th if the shot linkage rod has a crack in 1 end, that coupled with a shot linkage will make 5th impossible to find!

hi there i,m back and thanks for the info i think you are right and the 5th is just not to be found at the moment i will try checking this week. i was just a bit worried about it having a 4 speed box cos the speedo cable isnt fitted and the gasket doesnt seem to fit right on the motor block but that could all be just bad repairs! but you are right about the feeling of stiring rice pudding  lol.
