Title: gear linkage woes
Post by: normanw on 27 January 2008, 15:09
I started to undertake the replacement of al the gear linkage bushes today, everything was going way too well until I dicovered that at some point in my cars life someone had rounded the 3 13mm bolts which hold the linkage onto the top of the steering rack. They are really inaccessible too!

anyone had this problem or have any suggestions to get them out?

cheers in advance

hammer a 12 sided 12mm socket on, or what ever is the tightest fit, then obviously replace the bolts.

Get some Irwin bolt extractors. They're just heads for a socked set and about £20, worth every penny they'll have them off in seconds.

Those Irwin bolt extractors rock......... finished the replacement of all the gear linkage bits and set it up using the vw spacer tool this morning and the end result is a perfect smooth gear change so it was well worth the scuffed knuckles and cursing....... what a fiddly almost impossible job, anyway ty for the help and suggestions. Now time for the next job on my list

I got mine from screwfix, they came as a metric and imperial set, the ones I see now are two seperate sets, gutted recently as I just broke my 13mm, have to wait till my tool man comes round and see if he'll change on guarantee?
