Title: converting a mk2 8v digi to 16v kr...
Post by: dabill on 25 January 2008, 15:36
righty chaps, just testing the water now, looked at a few 8v engines, and seems to me that for the money i may as well opt for the revvy 16v engine conversion, and plus 16v engines seem to be alot easier to get ahold of, but as i say, just testing the water at the moment.

just want to know, what i'd be getting my self into, ie what parts do i need?

i know i'd have to take most of the wireing out and new clocks etc, but what about sub-frame etc? engine mounts? fuel pump/lines?

anything else that would mean im gonna get frustrated and really annoyed doing it?

cheers,

rob

You would be better off buying 16V IMO

As yours is a 90 spec one your easiest route is a 2.0 ABF 16v out of a MKIII. Straight in, a couple of wires and hello 150bhp!

apart from the usual stuff, to get a kr running in a digi car you need the fuel pump and lines too, basically approach the conversion as if you're starting from a carbed car!

ABF is easy but k-jet tends to get more power 'out of the box', an abf or 9a/6a running on kr managment is a monster

I'm thinking of swapping for the ABF

Currently looking for a cheapo mk3 to run round in for a bit then have engine out of and sent down to Cider Country for a rebuild/balancing etc. Need to check insurance first though

2l 16v in a mk2? Yes Please! Much better to go for this than just a 16v, which as Nealey said you may as well just buy if you want one.

well at moment funding has come to a standstill so this is now on backburner til summer...doh! but still the ABF sounds interesting, will keep my eyes peeled for an engine on the cheap!

kittie, insurance isnt that much more tbh, i know HIC go on the insurance of the car the engine comes out of, so i think mk3 16 is 1 or 2 groups higher than the 8v mk2... dont quote me on that!
