I wouldnt go for any car with that ammount of miles on it.

The engine will be fine but the its all of the other moving parts you need to take into consideration.

alot of people saying about the mileage is abit high ... think it all depends on the condition on the car and has it  got full vw fsh not normal or indy garage .... the reason i say that cuz vw dealer dont tend to look after customers pocket at all so if they see anything is not 100& right they will jus say the parts will needs to be replaced ,so with that kind of mileage i would of assume it has many parts been replaced ... also r u gonna mod it cuz if u gonna mod then u gonna replaced alot of parts sooner or later anyway . i got a 2001 turbo  with only 68k on the clock but i changed alot of parts already and but the time i finished moddin it  ,it will be  basically a new car by then ... think after i finish moddin ,the parts i didnt changed is the engine ,gearbox, wheel bearings ,hubs, alternator ,air con . seats ,interior .distributor . shell . so to me the mileage is not too important in my eye ,obviously the mileage is not gonna be too extreme like 250k then  thats different then ,,, u know i mean ....

I wouldnt let milage put you off at all, if the car has been well looked after as many are, then that milage shouldnt be a problem. I have a 1.8t on 115k and shes running better then all of my mates newer cars. You get out of cars what you put in and if you treat them well then there is no reason for mileage like that to affect the cars performance. Like some say 115k is barely run in
If you give it a thorough check focusing on all the known problems and can see proof of the cars life then i wouldnt let it put you off. Make sure you check the turbo though as that is the most likely thing to go at that mileage (if its had a harsh life...no warming up cooling down, ragging etc)

I agree with 1688bran on this one. Just make sure the car is in sound condition before commiting, that should be the same for any car regardless of mileage (you can buy a lemon with low miles as well!)

Also try and find out why the mileage is so high...was it motorway miles....how many owners etc the more research you do the clearer the cars history will become and you may be able to determine what sort of life it has had thus far

Cheers all, i am going to have a look at it today.

Luckily i have a friend who does all my car work and has worked for vw for around 18 years! - he's going to plug in his computer and generally have a good look at the car for me...may save me some problems and money in the future!!!

its quite highly priced though...for a 5door with high miles, try bringing him down closer to 4k.....

Stole my words. IMO thats way too high for the miles its done. Is it the 150 or the 180 model? If its the 180 then maybe its reasonable-ish. Always haggle to get the price down no matter what tho, that's my philosophy.

My ten pence worth...

When you test drive it listen really hard for bumps/crashyness/rattles to try and get a feel for how sturdy it is. The big jobs looming up that I would factor into the price at that mileage are...

1) Turbo will prob need replacing soon-ish.
2) All suspension bushes (lots of labour) and poss the suspension itself.
3) Might seem weird, but the sports seats might be getting either tatty or squeaky, which got irritating on mine.

Also, as for price, £4600 is quite a lot, unless your getting a really decent warranty? The other thing you need to consider is that with another 15,000 miles on the clock, its going to start getting pretty hard to sell on.

Just to give you an idea, I just sold my 80k 1.8T for £4,100 (could have got a bit more, but I didn't want it to hang around too long)
