Title: SO WHATS THE BEST ONE HERE THEN????
Post by: chev chelios on 23 January 2008, 17:51
Right lads n lasses,looking to buy a car this weekend,but Im tempted with a few variations of the mk4,can anyone explain which is going to be the best allrounder,and why.

Im looking for something thats nippy-reliable-and good to soak up the miles as its gonna be used for commuting to and from work(quite a distance).Ive heard allsorts of horror stories over the past few days-when Ive told people what Im looking for,are mk4s really that bad???.....Ive also been lucky enough to get my mits on a set of 18" rs4 wheels,and also a set of 19 r32 wheels from a mk5...one sets going on the car i finally decide to buy...but need your help peeps...cheers in advance.

Heres what ive found;

All around the same price-

mk4 gti 2.0. 84k,fsh,5 door.

mk4 gti t-20v turbo,95k,fsh,5 door

mk4 2.3 v5,fsh,3 door.not sure on the mileage as ive not yet viewed the car.

wouldnt mind a tdi-but cant seem to get one for love or money??

None of them will be nippy due to the weight of the MK4. From your list the 1.8T 20v would be the only one I would recommend. If you do a lot of mileage then the GT TDI 150 would be a good choice, but the 1.8T 20v wins if you do average mileage and is the all rounder IMO. My reasons are it's fairly quick, well build, better suspension than standard MK4s and the engine is very tuneable. Lots of smiles per gallon.

If your traveling a lot you want derv. Esp the 150 as iv heard its as quick as the 1.8t and much better economy.

Make sure you try out a 1.8T and a 2.0 or a derv and take them all for a test drive first before making up your mind. Then get insurance quotes  and make a decision from there. The 1.8t is the best all rounder and is higly tunable. However derv would be best for mpg as already said  :smiley:

Follow RichW's good advice - test them all and decide yourself! As for my personal opinion...

Firstly... I would only get a diesel if mileage was a huge factor. My 1.8T was getting mid 40's mpg on motorway runs, which is absolutely fine for me. If anybody wants more than that, they aren't serious about wanting a hot hatch  - diesels excluded obviously, but then I'm not a rep pulling 30,000 miles a year for example.

Secondly... I owned a 1.8T for years and absolutely loved it - It was the perfect compromised hot hatch, in that it was plenty quick enough when required, but very smooth, very quiet, excellent sound [factory] system, lovely seats, amazing cabin quality, etc. etc. The Mk4 gets a lot of stick... Yes its not as fast as a Focus ST, but then how often are you doing 0-60 runs? Yes it doesn't handle as well as a hot Megane, but then its not as crashy or poorly made either.

You'll love the Mk4!
