Have been using 95RON since I bought me GTI 3 months ago Should I be using super unleaded? What does everyone else use and what difference does it make?
-
Yes, super unleaded pal. The manual states this too. The Fsi engine is designed to run on higher octane fuel and doesn't acheive its best performance or economy on the lower grade stuff. Something to do the stratified mode of the engine or something, it can only do this on the higher octane stuff, did read all about it a while ago but I've slept since then and can't remember all the details.
Personally I've found shell v-power the best all round giving a much crisper responsive engine, although got caught short and had to put some Tesco 99/100 in and this was pretty good to

I used to use Sainsburys ultimate stuff... but found the Tesco good stuff alot better. Ironic really as Im not a fan of tescos and their exploitation.. but i would do anything for my baby!!! So the tesco good stuff it is!! :nerd:
-
If you look inside the cover of the fuel cap where the tyre pressure chart is there is also an advice label for fuel type.
well there is on my ed30.
I use Shell V-power, and get double points on my drivers card this month, to dull the pain of over priced fuel
-
There's been quite a few tests done on super unleaded petrol and the two best always seem to be Shell V-Power & Tesco 99
I think both are now 99 RON
the GTi manual recommends 98 RON ... so either of the above are fine
Other tips are :-
Petrol goes "off" over time, so best use a popular busy petrol station ! (one test found Tesco 99 best for consistency on this score)
It is also slightly more dense when cold....so fill up on when it's cold - early mornings !!

what is best for r32?
also my mpg rarely goes above 20mpg which is strange right?

Im not sure but like i said i use the tesco 99 stuff which i hear comes from the BP refinery. I have to admit that i rarely get over 20mpg either.. have been driving my dads car for like a week now and have been cruising around slowly.. but the minute im back in the R its like I turn into a loon!! You just cant drive this thing slow!
-
Tesco 99 all the way. V Power is too expensive and our Tescos frequently do a 5p off a litre when you spend £50 in store.
-
R32 isn't FSI - so normal 95 RON is fine.
However my dealer said he runs all his golfs on 95 RON and never had any problems - however I have been using Shell V Power.
-
V-Power for me
Found the car "livelier" than with BP Ultimate (97 RON).

I think you may be right there... The info sticker next to the cap states that it has to be over 95 i think. so normal should be fine.. but i opt for the good stuff anyway!
-
V Power is the best IMO but not tried many other brands yet only had the car 5 days!
-
My 56plate GTi says to use 95RON on the fuel cap.
From what I have read Tesco fuel is supplied by Greenergy of which Tesco own 25%, the fuel is 5% bio-ethanol and it is believed Sainsbury's fuel is supplied by BP.
I got my GTi last month and have been runningit on 95 RON for the last few refills, intend to experiment with some different fuels an see if I notice a difference.
-
i've used all of the top brands and all of the not so good brands of petrol and i can say it has made no difference to my GTI at all.
I've never managed more than 320miles out of a full tank regardless of how i drive.
I just use ron95 now. Rather save the money.

In an R32 not strange if you are doing urban driving. I get around 250 miles to a full tank. Overall average is 23mpg

98RON Super from the Emarat of Epco. At a whopping 90p a gallon, with a free window wash as well - woohoo!

Yes but on the downside, you've only got a flat SimCity in the desert to drive around
-
Mines only ever had V-Power since I got it last March, not a drop of anything else! So I'm probably wasting money on the expensive stuff when the normal unleaded would be fine! :undecided:
-
I was using Super for a while, now on normal and have never noticed any difference at all.
-
a standard gti on bp ultimate will be running 212bhp.
-
i used to run mine on shell v-power,now i just run it on regular shell and it seems no different to me.ive used a total garage once and it seemed to run sluggish.
-
On a slightly different subject, whats the cost of filling up a GTI as around £1.05p a litre? I keep meaning to work out the MPG i currently have to see what difference it will make to my wallet when i get the GTI....
-
it is a 55 litre tank, so 55x 1.05 = £57.75

it will be around £55
im averaging 26.5MPG. Works out at around 320miles out of a full tank (town driving)

....No, you're not wasting money - V-Power has various additives which help the longevity of your engine (so it says on the tin!). VW recommend at least 98 RON as best for the 2.0 FSI engine. It will run on lesser fuels but I, for one, wouldn't want to buy a GTI secondhand that had run on lesser fuel.

using Ron95 or Ron99 or any petrol will not affect the sale price of the car. They just look at the interior and exterior and under the hood.
And is there any way of knowing what its been run on........?
The average tom dick and harry off the street wount care.

....True, but what I mean by that is that if I was buying privately I would ask what fuel had been used and if the owner was truthful and told me 95 RON, I wouldn't want to buy that car. I was just illustrating that a GTI run on 98/99 RON should have an engine in better condition than one run only on 95 RON. I've read somewhere that running only on 95 RON is not good for the FSI.
-
might just be me but on the odd time I've been caught short and filled up with 95 it seems to drink this stuff like a dog. I am doing the same journey everyday and no way can i do the same mileage on 95 as I do on tesco 99.

I would second that! Its a little less if in a hurry that week

Thanks for that. All helps when deciding how much to spend on the car.

Don't worry, as RR says your GTi is designed to run on 98 RON or better.
It will run OK on 95 RON and you may not FEEL any difference, but your engine is not running as efficiently or powerfully as it can - perhaps around 5%-10% below what it could do on 98/99 RON.
Have a read of this article and you will feel better

I use Shell V-Power for the following reasons;
1) I was told to by a certain someone
2) I get Shell points
3) It has been tested and proved to be the best fuel
4) It is near where I live
5) I have a company fuel card so I don't really care how much it costs as my employer pays for it
-
I always use Shell V-Power. If I travel somewhere, one of my preparation moments is to check where the Shell stations that sell V-Power are. But France was a disappointment, they do not have V-Power. Italy has.
You only have Tesco in Britain.

Thats good to know. Want to take the best care of the engine possible, especially as its running on a remap, I'm always checking the oil, even though its hardly used a drop in 9k!

....France does have V-Power - I have had no problem on the autoroutes running full length North-South. Less easy to find V-Power off the autoroute corridors.
-
I have just used V-power and Tesco 99. The car seemed happy on both. Not tried 95 Ron. The engine doesn't run as clean using it, I read somewhere that it needs 98 Ron for the FSI to work efficiently.
-
Was at my local tescos this morning but it appears that they do not have 99RON in Northern Ireland yet.
-
Not all tescos have it over here pal
-
Not sure if this has been posted before? I use TESCO 99 and works well. Here is a link to where you can find it - http://www.greenergy.com/tesco_99_octane/where_to_buy.html (http://www.greenergy.com/tesco_99_octane/where_to_buy.html)

no, it does not have V-Power. What they call V-Power is simple 98. Here in Switzerland we have V-Power 100.

Teutonic Tamer explained it with the FSI once... I wonder where he's at?

You are right about it coming from the same refinery,
I Work in the oil and gas sector for BP, I used to work at the Grangemouth refinery which supplies the whole of Scotland and north England with fuel. Shell , Tesco, Sainsbury's, ESSO and Texaco all these companies buy their fuel from this refinery. All they do is when the leave the refinery gates put in some additives which mix in the tank en route to the forecourt's.
Another thing to Note, when buying fuel make sure you buy from a forecourt which isnt right next to the refinery as the additive hasnt had long to mix in the petrol tanker!

Just out of interest, this 'greenergy' stuff is anything but green!
In Sumatra, for example, they've chopped down a big chunk of their rainforests to plant palm oil for supplying Europe's biofuels. If that weren't bad enough, they had to drain the swamps that much of this forest was standing in, and now that the air can get to the peat, the ground is emitting 30 times more carbon into the atmosphere each year than the saving from not burning oil pumped out of the ground.
Some 'green' fuel!
