My 1999 Golf 2.0 GTI has recently had a sudden mpg drop, it was reading about 35mpg on a steady motorway run now it has dropped suddenly to around 20-25mpg what could cause this?? :embarassed: thanks ricky
-
hi there ive got a 2.0 litre 2, were u on the motorway when it dropped or just around town?
-
The motorway i think, i just noticed the reading was alot lower than normal, and it seem to give readigs more often.
-
if you sppeded up that would cause a drop in mpg if not then i suggest take it to your local garage and just ask them to put it on a fault n code reader and see if you had a problem. maybe a sensor at worst.
let us know how you get on mate
-
How much would that set me back?
-
dont hold me to it maybe £50-£60 depends if u go to the main stealers!!! i dont think theres a charge 4 using the fault reader ive never paid anyway and ive used it twice
-
i have just noticed that it seems to have developed and slight missfire/lumpyness in the revs??
-
Mine did this once, booked it into the garage and a few days later it was fine.
It was running like sh!t, lumpy, 20mpg, even less power than usual.... then suddenly back to normal.
The oil light warning had come on the day before it did this (had only just bought it and not realised how much it used!) but had been filled before it started.
-
any ideas what it was?? coil pack? plugs? just seems to lumpy on idle and now smells like its rich from the exhaust.
-
would vagcom pick up the fault?
-
o2 sensor at a guess, seems to go wrong commonly on the 2.0's
-
Il try and give the MAF a clean today and see if it helps
-
As topher said my money goes on the O2 sensor. That went on my 2.0 a few months ago now, was giving me 19MPG etc.
Dont take it to the stealers, just go to your local garage, I would have thought they would sort you right out (thats what I did).
-
where is the O2 sensor? is that the lambda probe?
