lift the engine cover off ,you will see a filter housing filter is in side it ,i use oil filter strap to loosen it.(pd)

so its just a case of twisting off the cap and pulling out the old filter?

uncrew filter cap,
remove the plastic rod that holds the filter
remove filter
change the 2 o-rings (come with filter)
put filter in
reinsert rod
re-screw cap.
clean up mess

not had a chance to look yet so might be a really simple job but where is the drain for the oil?
gonna change the oil in my gt-tdi but not entirely sure as to how to do it, was easy in my old 306 but not had a go in the golf yet
any hints and tips would be great
cheers all
Phil

oil change is peice of cake, and you could probably do it without jacking the car up (assuming you can remove the sump cover)
jack up, remove the sump cover (about 8 screws T25 IIRC)
remove sump plug, drain oil, replace with new plug and seal, change filter, add oil run engine on idle job done
-
i take it the sump plug is obvious?
new plug?

yeah IIRC its the only bolt on the base of the sump
i've not changed the sump plug myself, as my friends got a machine that drains the oil through the dip stick hole, but i think the plugs come with the seal and you're looking at a few £ so do both.

bit old i knw but what that system that drains it though the dipstick hole surely that cant get all the crap out

There shouldn't be any crap at the bottom, that's what the filter is for
