Hi all...probably gonna get some biased answers in here lol
I bought my first golf 6 months ago and at the time was undecided to get a mk2 or mk3 and ended
up buying a 16v 1996 p reg mk3. BUT the more i look at the mk2's the more i want one!
Have any of you guys drove both and would you recommend going for the mk2?
I CANT DECIDE!!! :undecided:
-
For starters the MK2 looks a hell of a lot better than a MK3, by miles. It also drives A LOT nicer standard and it's great fun to drive. It's a much cooler car imo. Find yourself a nice example and you won't be disappointed.
-
do it!!!
edit: moment of weakness :afro:
-
dont do it!!!
stick with the mk3
In my opinion
Don't listent to him, he's a traitor and thinking of buying a non VW car.
-
Haha!
I love my mk2 but hate it at the same time ...
-
I know MK2's can be a pain in the arse when they go wrong but once sorted you don't know why you even doubted it. Fantastic cars.

*slap*

If you want a more spirited drive then yes get one.
If you can't live without the luxuries of the mk3 then don't (more noisy, less comfortable).
If you want my opinion then what are you waiting for, get one as soon as possible ;)
-
I owned a Mk3 GTI for a couple of year and now have a mk2 16v. I think the mk2 is a much sportier drive and it looks so much more iconic than a mk3.
I bought a late mk2 which has power steering and most of the stuff my mk3 had. As the mk2 is an older car just be prepared to look after it, if you can handle the odd problem then what are you waiting for go and get one!
I love my mk2 and im glad I switched.

if you can handle the odd problem

I drove a 1.4 mk3 and because it had power steering it was much easier than my mk2 but get one cos they arent a boat!
-
Get a MK4 . . . :D
-
Mrk 2 all the way! great fun to drive.

That is probably the most MASSIVE signature in the world...
-
  probs :) i'll make it smaller wen I can b arsed lol, at work atm

Get one, you wont be dissapointed! But be prepaired if you get a tidy one, for a long list of people saying "If you ever decide to sell it, let me know!"
-
Get it but be ready to spend time and money(not silly numbers) on her, its a labour of love ...
MK2 is a classic I wonder what other golfs will fall in that category 20 years from now!?

cant see the mark 3 being classed a modern classic imo its to soft get a mark 2

"Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music." - lol, haven't noticed that before.
As for the question, I used to have a Mk3 gti, and now drive an 8v mk2...... As for repairs, in my experience they're both as bad as each other.... the mk3 is quieter, but that's the only area in which it wins, the mk2 is more fun, more confident, more retro. You can feel the moment any of the wheels step an inch out of line, and it makes you smile. Plus it does look (these are all opinions of course) far better.
The downside is parts are harder to come by......
If you think you might like one that's reason enough to go and buy one right now. I don't think you'll regret it. But as has been said - they're old cars so things will need to be done as time goes on. You'll get annoyed, you'll pay the bill (or just fix it yourself) but a couple of days later when it's a nice evening and you're opening it up in third out of a long corner and it's growling like a b!tch you'll forget all about it.

Never a truer word spoken.

Exactly what I was just thinking.

You obviously don't shop in the right places then.
Parts are a piece of piss to come across.

i had a 1992 mk3 gti 8v, what a sluggish piece of sh!t.(before this i had an integra type r )my mk2 isnt any faster but so much more fun to drive than a mk3, love the noise, love having no heating love its character love it!!!

seconded! Definately a way of life. I hate mine in the winter months, then i wash it and think, Yeah!
-
id pick up a highish milage 8v, you can get these for a good price, alot less than the more 'desirable' 16v then put in an abf and you have the best of both worlds.
all depends if you have the time to do such a conversion.and youll learn alot on the way
