Title: Golf GTI 30 Import Help!!!!!
Post by: sammini7 on 16 January 2008, 23:28
Hi Guys,

I have fell in love with the new gti 30! I have seen one at motorpoint  cannock for £19,899 a import but Uk spec apparrently? I noticed that the there was no space saver just a repair kit, are there any other items of intererest that I should be looking at to verify it as a Uk spec car? Also regarding insurance am I right in assumming this car is classed as a parallel import and not a grey import? will the fact its a paralllel import send my insurance premium sky high? If the manual is in english should I expect the manual to be stamped by a uk dealer to show conformance to Uk spec (PDI) :undecided: ?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Regards

Sam Hinkley

Hi Sammini and welcome to the forum

Look on the link below for the UK standard ED30 spec.

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new_cars/golf_gti30/standard_spec

If your car is a UK spec parallel import, then the insurance should be the same as any other ED30. The fact that there is a puncture repair kit in the boot and not a spacesaver tyre would raise my suspicions, but others on this forum who have UK spec imports may be able to put your mind at rest with that.

I'm on my second GTI import ! ....  I've found no downside to it really ... only the lack of a 3rd year warranty

My current ED30, like yours, had a puncture repair kit (which I swapped with spacesaver from my part ex GTI)

Other things to check for UK spec are :

A. Full Spacesaver Sparewheel in boot - (UK Spec.)
B. Full Alarm and Immobiliser (check by locking someone in the car, keep still for a minute, and then move arms around ) - (UK Spec)
C. Headlight settings are UK spec (ie headlights are not always on with ignition)
D. 8 or 10 speakers (some Dutch imports have no rear speakers at all)
E. English Manuals in leatherbound GTi holder (UK Spec but rarely found in English with imports)
F. Check all the documentation (PDI stamped etc)
G. Find out how long it will take for the V5 form to arrive as you need this to register the car with VW UK.
H. Make sure it is a current year model - 3d type markings on indicator and light stalks are one sign.

The Service book should have the PDI stamped and dated by the foreign VW dealer - your warranty and VW Assist start from this date, so make sure it is fairly recent (a few weeks ago at most).  There have been cases of 2 year old imports being sold as new   ! - but not with ED30's as far as I know.

I have never had any problems insuring my cars, and never paid any extra premium at all.

Get it registered with VW UK asap after you receive the V5 (take the V5 & service book data sticker to your nearest VW dealer - they can do it)

You can get spacesavers on e-bay for around £50 if you're patient

Hope this helps..and enjoy your car !  you've got it at a great price, especially if that includes the metallic / pearlescent paint

I'v never heard of any difference in steering wheels, apart from the two types - standard & multifunction

Have you got a link to the photo  ?

The only thing I can fnd on Autotrader is  this one  (http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLKSWAGEN+GOLF/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-37-50-54-141-156-179-4294966995-4294967159/advert.action?R=200752300994012&distance=85&postcode=Ls17+8XW&channel=CARS&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=GOLF&min_pr=19000&max_pr=25000&max_mileage=5000) and it looks a bog standard ED30 steering wheel to me :

Just spotted it was your first post

Welcome to the GolfGTI.co.uk forum !!   I'm pretty new on this forum as well ... seems a good busy one

I see what you mean about the steering wheel in  this photo  (http://www.mh2k.com/ecarsuk/1030240_0_4085/volkswagen_golf_gti_edition_30/index.htm)

It's not an ED30 steerng wheel - no red stitching or GTi emblem etc. ?,  but the car has the half leather seats and golf ball gear stick...

Can only think it's a one off mistake...but something else to check

The performance stats on the link Johnnyg posted also quote 198bhp and 207lbft which are the outputs (+1bhp) of the standard GTI.

The steering wheel doesn't have the GTI insignia on the bottom spoke either, although I understand that these are sometimes fitted at the dealers. It seems to be in order otherwise :nerd:

I think someones done a bit of stealing there, taking the steering wheel out off ther 1.6 golf and changing them over.

Doesn't appear to have darkened rear light clusters, either. All looks extremely suspect to me!

What other bits have they swapped, I wonder?

That steering wheel looks crap compared to the Ed30 one... If stuff like that has happened, I wouldn't trust them at all.

Hi Everyone
I've just bought an import ed 30 from Motorhouse in cannock. And the only thing i can find different from the full UK spec is the puncture repair kit instead of a space saving spare wheel. If considering buying from motorhouse i would recommend viewing before puting your cash down, the sales people have no idea what spec the cars have come with. I was told the car didnt have the auto lights and wipers but when i went to look at the car it had. As for the ed30 with the normal steering wheel when i asked why it had a different steering wheel and no one could give me a straight answer so i would be carefull if interested in this car.

Hi guys I'm now the proud owner of golf gti 30 edition the car is full UK spec minus space saver!! it has the correct steering wheel and after a day of driving I'm hooked! I have driven various very quick cars a Porsche carerra 4 (996), Jag XKR, Audi S3,S4 and S8 (previous generation) and a left hooker Ferrari 360 courtesy of rich girlfriends dad. I always felt depressed having driven such nice cars in the past every other car just felt dull until I landed my ed30 I have a car that gives me pure joy everytime I turn the key!!!
