Ok..bloody stupid question but hey..I've not had a mk2 16v before!
What fuel would it have used out the factory? 4star or unleaded?
if its 4star what do I need to do to make it run on unleded?
if it runs on unleded how do people get on with optimax and other higher octain fules?
cheers :)

i'm using the cheapo tesco stuff and its fine and there is another thread on here asking how many miles out of ya mk2...some guys are still getting quality mileage from theirs
-
The owner manual and fuel flap says 98 ron fuel. This means super unleaded is the one to go for. I am currently half way through comparing that and normal unleaded. Slight increase in power, better idling and it appears about 4mpg more with super !!!

always run a mk2 gti on 98ron or higher...as its supposed to run on this fuel...will run on 95ron but not very well...
i currently run mine on 99ron fuel from local tesco...and its never felt better...its also about 8p cheaper than local shell or BP...and dont believe the hype that tesco/supermarket fuel is crap...maybe years ago yes...but these days just as good or better in some cases...
also if its been run on 95 ron for a while after a few tanks of 98+ron fuel you will feel difference...much smoother and will get the bhp the cars supposed to have...
enjoy ur mk2

cheers all!
I had a chat with the last owner (He had the car since 1990) and said either super or 4 star? (lrp)
I went through all the paperwork that I got with the car and noticed that it is reccomended that 97ron is used :)
Will update the fuel thread once I have run a few tanks of optimax - will take a while though!!
-
all vw engines sine the 70s sometime can run on unleaded, VW were ahead of the game on that one :)
16vs from the factory are timed up to work with 97+ fuel, if you run em on 95 you gotta drive very carefully otherwise they'll start pinking and damage the engine. You can adjust the timing to allow it to run on 95ron fuel though, but obviously it wont be as quick. If you decide to run it on 99ron, you could advance the timing a bit more to squeeze out a few more horses
-
people used to use leaded in them to get a higher octane i think, before super was made
-
yeah im not saying you cant use 4 star if you wanted, just that you dont have to :)
-
im saying the used to use leaded! theres no need nowadays, i think we got our wires crossed
-
so..if it has been on 4 star in the past no damage will have taken place?
Last owner used super all its life :)
-
nope non at all, the only way fuel will damage an engine is if you used unleaded in an engine thats not designed to take it, or if you use low ron fuel in an engine not setup for it and rag the tits off it ignoring the horrible pinking noise
-
Cheers for the reasurance - I've just filled it with optimax and will see how it feels :)
-
Optimax / V Power is what i use, however i've just stuck £20 of Tescos 99 ron in so will see how that goes.
-
:embarassed: oops that might mean i need to do all the bloody timing again then...the previous geezer adjusted all the timing and there certainly aint no pinking...
Re-adjustment might mean better performance and mileage then?!? Nice one!
Good luck with the mk2 fella and let us know how ya go on...any timing tool tips? Mine also has been WUR modded apparently...altho i believe this aint always a good thing
