Changed the gaiters On my car. The cv on the one side was quite tight however im doing the otherside at the mo (which was knocking on lock). I take it I will need to replace it. Also ive cable tied the gaiter on. shoud this be ok as i can't figure how too do those metal clips up??

cable ties should be alright as long as you have the rubber type gaitor. i had a plastic type one  and whenever i put the cabletie on it came off.
as for the metal clips, if its the one that im thinking it should be, you put it around the CV joint and do it up as tight as you can with the different settings on the clip, then use a pair of side cutters on the raised section of the clip and then crush it down to tighten.
i hope that helps

Yes i have the rubber type, it seems secure ive used some heavy duty ties. Should the cv be loose ( in comparison which the other side seems much looser) . would this cause the knocking noise when the wheel is on lock
-
Not too sure on that mate to be honest. Im sure one someone on here will know though

here you go, this is how you fit CV boot clips, I've also seen these clips on steering rack boots:

You should check that the bolts on the gearbox end of the driveshaft are tight, but if it's clonking it's far more likely to be because the surfaces of the CV joint are pitted.
I did a write up about CVJs a while back. It's about T25 joints, but a lot of it's the same, especially for the inner joints on the Golfs. The article is here (http://busgoons.com/content/view/17/27/)
There is also a written-up how to on changing the outer boot (and joint) here (http://diamondhell.com/content/view/33/30/)

Yes where pitted so ive just changed it

I think i have a CV joint to do - not sure if its inner or outer yet but theres a definate knocking - how bad a job is it? And how much are parts?

cost me £36 for cv however ill get £11 back when i take them the old one so £25 in total for the kit. Theres a good guide on this tread, took me about 6 hours for the oneside and about 1 hour for the other lol.
