Changing the cv gaitors cant get the hub nut off am i right in thinking its anti clockwise
-
Yup, its anti clockwise, its also the tightest nut you'll ever have to undo. Plenty of WD40 and alot of brute force is whats needed, persevere but it is very tight.
-
Ive got a halfords 1/2 torque rench which has a long bar on it are they guarenteed? Think it will brake if i try any harder
-
use a breaker bar or piece off scaff pipe to lengthen the bar easier to undo the then
-
And don't use your torque wrench to undo nuts, its a cardinal sin. As said, a half inch breaker bar and good balance as you stand on the end of it bouncing up and down.
-
Have tried that ill wack plenty of wd40 on tonight and look for a longer length of tubing. I presume the nut has to come off to change the outer cv rubber
-
Yes that bolt has to come off
-
Grrr, this always gets me. WD40 is not a penetrating fluid!
You would do better using plusgas. Available from all good tool suppliers / halfords etc.
-
mine where that tight i actually got my golf doing a wheelspin without the engine running
Good luck
-
Not too sure about golfs, but it's possible that only one side has an anticlockwise nut. Also for getting it off try getting your hands on an airgun, when I was doing the back axle on the kit-car it was the only way that worked, including a 10ft breaker bar!
-
yh the nut has to come off, like every one said its the tighter than a tight thing! i had to use a legth of scaffold pole with my dads breaker bar. just get one person to put ther foot on the back of the socket to hold it square otherwise it slips off well easy. it still takes some fair force on the scaffold pole to get it off! just stick at it and plenty of penetrating oil! oh and its defintily anti clockwise.
-
right then ill mentally prepare myself tonight and give it a bash tomorow ive got the otheside bloody side to do also
-
Dude, that 3 year old thing's not funny.
-
yeh 3 year old thing is not right  haynes book of lies says that the hub nut is done up to 265nm
-
Just out of interest, when you come to put it back together, how would you know you've done the nut up tight enough?? Surely a torque wrench doesn't go that high??
-
they do
we got one in the workshop that goes up to 1000 nm
it takes 3 of us to use it
-
think mine goes up to 250ish though im not worried about that at the mo just getting the f***ing thing off would be a start
-
Soak the thing in plusgas overnight and then get a 10ft length of scaffold and a breaker bar leave the breakerbar and scaffold so you can either hang off it or stand on it - use your weight.
Last time I did a hub nut I had to get a extra pair of hands to hold the socket in place. (That was on a fiesta tho)
-
i used my my trolley jack to keep mine level , a short extension bar from the socket, and a mate to keep the pressure on the nut.
and like i said . i had the wheel turn before the nut broke free. ( fitted a 14 inch steelie to drop it back onto its wheels ) and then had my lad put his foot on the brake
 oh the joys of car maintenance
-
Yeah, should have said its easier with car on ground and wheels and brakes on.
-
f**kin hell looks like my mechanic friend is going to have fun when he goes to do the front wheel bearings on my car soon   rather him than me
-
What's all the fuss about, ya big girls?
These hub nuts are dead easy.
Try undoing the castle nut on the back of a T25 Transporter - they have to be done UP to 350NM. Now add 20 years and try getting the 46mm nut off. Me I use 3/4" drive + long pole on them.
2' breaker bar + one fat bloke normally seems to work on Golfs.
-
Hurray its off very long bar and a bit of jumping, then ping it moved
-
CONGRATS!!!!
for future referance if you dont have a bit of scaf pole to extend ya breaker bar you can lean on the bar hard and then smash it at the end harder.
abit of shock loading works lots of the time
at my work we use GT85 penetrant spray oil and its the muts
-
if you ever plan to do this in future I recommend you pop to halfords and invest in a 30mm impact socket, they fit the nut very tightly and wont slip off as easily as a std 30mm socket will. Their breaker bars are well worth the money too. I had to buy both in 1 go when my crappy 12point socket started to slip and my breaker bar exploded trying to do the same thing on my GTI
-
I had on of these to hand as you say good tight fit, well worth the money. Noticed that one of the cvs is wobley where as the other one was quite stiff. does the wobly one need changing?
-
did you hear any clicking when driving round corners?
-
There's a lot of factors that determine whether a driveshaft/joint is tight or floppy - they're much like women in that respect.
Also, if there is a slight 'clicking', or they're a bit tight you may find they just need lubing up - both women and CV joints again.
Do bear in mind that your CV joints won't respond to dirty talk, and please don't confuse CV grease with KY Jelly, the consequences could be disasterous and totally change your thoughts on how 'dirty' a woman is.
I'll get me coat, shall I?
-
yes
