Title: Knocking on reverse
Post by: catflea on 13 January 2008, 16:02
Hi Guys.  First time here.

Got a problem with my Mk2  driver G plate (GTI lookylike)

when reversing there is a knocking coming from (I think the front) I think it might be a CV joint or something like that - but I am not sure any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I'm planning on getting underneath for a good look soon.

btw, might be a noob but not a novice got plenty of other projects on the go too!

Could be your exhaust. Look at that first. The rubbers may be in bad shape or missing causing more movement in the exhaust system than there should be, and its knocking on the body.

The exhaust is loose - needs a rear rubber - its got a bodge at the moment where I work out where to get another,   but surely that would manifest itself going forwards too?

Its a kinda clicky noise,  not the type of noise you'd expect from an exhaust

Maybe a CV joint? Check the rubber gaitors at either end of both drive shafts for splits.

I was thinking CV but not got underneath to have a look - is it a big job to sort them on these?
