Title: Rat look mk2?
Post by: bigman_10 on 11 January 2008, 17:39
what do you rekon to the rat look? my 1.3 mk2 is mechanically sound as i've replaced virtualy all the suspension and braking components and fully serviced the engine (although it is stuggling in cold weather, thts tomorrows job!) so its fairly sound. however it is a 1.3 so the resale value isn't amazing i rekon 250 300 quid (is tht about right) The problem lies with the paint work i've currently got a bluey grey bonnnet with an alpine white body, thers a bit of surface rust tht i need to get sorted soon and i dont want to pay for a proper paint job to sort the bonnet out. I want to give a full body respray a go, however if i tried my hardest and it ended up looking dodgey i wouldn't be able to live with myself so i was thinking of going for a matt black paint and making the car into a rat look. I think it'd look alright if i sorted out its stance and made a decent job of it. (the main reason is i dont think it would show up as much if i made a mess of the resray) but what do other people rekon, i'm 18 and a student so it'd suit my look as most students these days go for the 'rat look' hair and just woke up look. (or so my dad likes to think) but am i just being a k.n.o.b or would be worth it??? sorry about the mini essay i got a bit carried away!!!

cheers guys

chris.

Looked a bit silly, got broken into twice, and finally went off to the great scrapyard in the sky. But it was kinda fun while it lasted.

^ I agree it looks ace, but the tyres sticking out past the arches that much is "slightly" illegal!

yh if i didn't get black tht would be it i rekon. is it called olive somthing coz it looks mental. i rekon i'm gonna do it when this typical english weather gets better so the paint has just a little tiny chance of drying lol!

I guess so, but IMO there's nothing better than a tidy standard MK2 Golf with shiny paintwork.

you've convinced me now its goin ratty! i'm gonna paint the bonnet first and see how i like it then do the lot in matt balck! any recommendations for paint? i wont be using masonary paint lol..

i'd like to get some bbs ra's jammed in the arches. i'm looking at the 15s but i want to go faily wide without having to go into surgery on the arches. whats the suitable limit on rim width the standard steelies are 13*5j with a +38mm offset? would 7j be too much? front and rear?

i love rat and i have ratted a few of my previous rides. i did it to a camper once and trippled money on the sale!  i dont see it as a waste of a car. like the dude mentioned in the original post, he wants a full respray but has to do it himself and knows it wont be great.  this is why i did my first ratter.  i think a badly executed "normal" paint job looks far far worse than a badly executed matt paint job.  at the end of the day its still a golf and it can always be painted properly in the future.  the only thing i am not keen on is removing all the paint and making it rust. you cant force patina!

yh i agree with you on that one lewis i hate it when people leave it to rust. but thanks for that link dubsport exactly what i was looking for did you complete yours in the end? and i kno people tried to clear this up in that thread but i'm being a div and my brain int fuctioning properly to paint it matt black you need to:

rub it down to bare metal
apply the 'scotch'
spray over it in satin
spray over that with matt black

is that right? i was just thinking i could rub it down a bit, where there are rusty parts put some sort of rust killer on over it. then spray a primer and then spray your matt black on that. would this be ok or would it still rust under the paint work? in the method above is the satin used as a primer then?

cheers guys

ref painting matt black -  in simple terms, rub down your paint, do any rust reps you feel necessary (they'll probably be rusty again in 6 months though!) spray with primer. gentle rub down of the primer then paint on the matt black.

stand back and admire how hard your car looks

go scare children

if rat look =mat paint seems like a good idea for a respray. none of those sh!tty ripples you always get with shiny resprays. didnt know anybody did it though.

lol go scare children ! i agree with people that leaving it to go rusty and die is not a good thing and maybe i should have just put 'matt black' as the title as i have no intetions of wreking it just making it look mean as a mutha f****r. coz i like to 'go scare children'!!!!! love it! : (woo thats sounds a bit wierd )

reminds me of tht dodge ram advert that scares all the cuddley soft toys 'perfect' lol

yh nut i have feb half term coming up so i'm gonna go get some paint and fix it up thn! cant wait. i'll go bbs hunting in the meantime. any goin cheeeeep?
