Title: what revo to go for?
Post by: Y444GAR on 11 January 2008, 12:59
Hey all, just got my Mk 5 GTI the other week and was wondering what type of revo chip everyone goes for, Ive read all the topics about them but none say the actual type people go for. If anyone knows please get back to me.

Do you need to upgrade the dump valve as Ive heard the standard one splits with the extra boost?

Thanks, Gary

Welcome to the forum Gary

Nice spanking new GTI there. I bet you can't wait until it is run in, so that you can give it a proper spanking

I didn't go for a Revo Remap. I went for an APR, which I had done at Awesome GTI in Irlam (nr Manchester).

I am currently awaiting the Forge DV as I think it is a wise upgrade to do, especially considering the reports on failed standard DV's.

Its been getting a proper spanking already  I had a fiesta ST before the golf and that was ran in hard and it was alot quicker than other ST's. I just make sure its properly heated before it gets the beans. Wel am up in Aberdeenshire so i wont be travellin that far. Ive heard good reports about starperformance in fyfe, scotland but my mate has a new leon cupra with a full milltek, 3" downpipe and a corbonio intake and hes always went for starperformance but hes thinking along the lines of the revo now.

If anyone does have a revo did you go for the select or the select plus?

Is this the forge dump valve you went for? http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content.asp?inc=product&cat=260303&product=FMFSITVR

Yes, The DV that fits the ED30 has the "R" at the end. Awesome initially forgot the "R" the first time they ordered it for me and as a result I'll now get it for less, due to having to go back over from Sheffield to have it fitted.

Unsure if it's the one you want though. I think the one for the standard GTI is the one below

http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content.asp?inc=product&cat=1703DV&product=FMFSITV

As you may notice it doesn't have the "R" on the end as the "R" denotes the remote version, which has the DV fitted near the front of the car. This was relocated in the ED30 from the standard GTI position due to heat soak and accessibility issues.

The one he's shown is a Diverter valve and is not an atmospheric version but a recirculating one - so not chav :nerd:

O rite aye c  well am only 18 so I would be tempted with the chav option to get the dump valve noise but what diverter valve would you advise me to buy because you would get bored of the dump valve noise after a while.

Aye min! Wondered if you would make on to here

Some good info on this site. If you are serious about modifying, then you need to uprate the exhaust and filter first and foremost. One of the lads I know locally has a MK5 GTi with Turbo Back Milltek (2.75" MSAU287 Downpipe which is designed for the K03s MK5 GTi), a panel filter and a stage 2 Revo from Checkpoint. It really flies. You can buy the select and select plus boxes after the remap as well. The select plus is currently under re-design, but allows the adjustment of boost, fuel and timing. Revo factory settings are 6 for boost, 6 for timing and 9 for fuel and assumes you are using quality fuel like Shell V-Power.

Personally, I would not bother uprating the dump valve (or dv as the odd few like it to be called) unless you want the noise. If you do, the Forge FSI T valve with an atmospheric adaptor will do this for you. Forge will have you believe that the standard valve is gash, but I know a few lads with standard and uprated MK2 Leon Cupra's and MK5 GTi's that are running on the standard valve and are having no problems. Having said that you do sometimes see problems on the odd car on the forums with power loss due to a failed valve. This could be swapped under warranty (cost is £23 I think).

The other thing that would be cost effective would be adding the S3 intercooler which has a 1.5cm thicker core and reportedly gives 40-60% better cooling which stops heatsoak and the result of the engine pulling things back and effectively reducing power. These cost approx £200 including VAT and hoses from the likes of Hawco in Peterhead so therefore are much cheaper than the likes of APR, Forge and Oettinger.

There is a rolling road day organised at Star Performance on www.uk-mkivs.net for MK4 and MK5 Golfs and another one organised at www.seatcupra.net the week before. You could speak to Jim when you are there if you go about his GIAC map and see the switch box when you are there. If you want, I could go there with you.

I am going with Giac @ Star, the car has done 1100 miles now so i am happy to map it now, dont have a decent Revo delaer near me that has a r/r so once the funds are secured its go time.
Although i was swithering wether to hold of until GTi Internat this year and see what Custom Code could do for the car, usually some good show prices.but again no r/r.

£1800 to insure a GTI at the age of 18 in the UK where insurance is supposed to be sky high...not too bad....im sure it does depend on where you are living, where you park your car etc?

My hometown is Liverpool... most of the kiddies there fund their car purchases through drug dealing... and they drive much nicer vehicles than Golf GTi's - indeed, when I visited family at Christmas I was told my car war "nothing special - everyone wannabe has one"
Enjoy the car Gary... Tornado red just like mine - good taste

Hi Gary - I've got Revo Stage1 (and lots of hardware mods which contribute to performance when remapped). The Revo guys are excellent and well established.

Go for the standard Revo Stage1 switch box to start off with and see how you like it. You can pay an extra £50 when you want a Stage2. It doesn't make great sense to have a Stage2 without having the other mods. But beware coz modding is a very slippery slope and not cheap yet for Mk5's.

I've done 44,000 miles including limitless German autobahns and other parts of Europe and am satisfied with Stage1.

If his Fiesta is anything to use as a benchmark for his Golf, the suspension upgrade, exhaust and filter are probably already on order

I'd say that cheaper insurance is scant compensation for hair growing out my ears. Still, at least I can trim those off (when I remember). Now where did I put my teeth?
