Title: Long life service
Post by: stevieC on 08 January 2008, 21:14
Does anyone on the forum go for the long life service, cars booked in on friday and have been quoted £230 or £130 for yearly one, this is its first service just wondering which is best and is it the same oil they use for both services.

GTI is better on time and distance service regime rather than long life. The oil used should be the higher spec long life rather than the time and distance oil. :nerd:

Sounds about right... I was quoted £95 and £195 last year, for a T&D and Longlife Service respectively.

What is your car currently set to ?

For the £130 T&D service I doubt you will get the better Longlife Oil, as yes, they use different (cheaper oil) for the standard T&D service.

The best service regime really depends on how you drive the car, how many miles a year you do and the type of driving you do (town or motorway - as these affect the longlife servicing period significantly.  If you drove 18,000 miles a year and nearly all on Motorway you'd probably be best on Longlife.  If you drove 10,000 a year, nearly all around town, you'd probably be best on T&D.

You want a 10K t&d lubrication service (aka an oil change) with long life oil.  Should be about £90 (inc. long life oil).  No need to pay extra for an interval service - that's at 20K.

Mine has gone in today at 11,500 miles 14 months since new (although I've only had it 13 as bought import).

Having discussed options with servicing guy I chnaged it to the T&D service.  He said that their dealership policy is to use long life oil on all models and no matter which servicing schedule they are on, but if it is a T&D service they will only charge the same price as the standard oil where as you will get charged the full long life price if you are on the long life service schedule.

I've recently come up to the 10000mile mark on my car; should i get the car serviced, despite the fact that the dealers are suggesting i should leave it until the service indicator comes on?
When checking for the distance/days to service, its showing 3800miles. Cheapest i've been quoted so far is £157 - cheaper than what we paid for our polo!!!

Given my recent experience of a main dealer doing an oil change but NOT changing the filter (and the oil contained in it), I would be really really sceptical about anyone doing 3 years services for £200 - that only just covers the cost of the the long life oil and filters, and allows nothing for labour. I found out the hard way that unless you are assertive enough to demand that you stand and watch the mechanic do what he is supposed to be trained to do, you get what you deserve - for trusting VW main dealer mechanics. If you pay peanuts ...!!!

It's just a promo to get you buying a Golf rather than waiting till later in the year when the new Golf might be out. My WRX had the same deal - three years free servicing. BMW do it with Minis. It's increasingly common. You pay VW £200 for the package. The dealer charges VW for the service, whatever that actually costs. Infact, my A4 just cost me £295 for a service, and I was asked if I had taken out one of the service plans - as they make it substantially cheaper.

Prior to discovering the VW deal, I was going to take my dealers 2 years for £299 deal. The dealer just wants to have work coming in for the service dept - better to be discounted than none at all I assume is the philosophy.
