hi mate sounds like an earthing fault check the earthing point behind dash board, you should see abrown wire from the dash loom fixed to a point on the bulkhead
also remove dash and check that the nuts holding the circuit board to the clocks are tight,
do a search in the electrical forums for dashboard
hope this helps

Rafe,
Thanks very much.  Someone has suggested a similar thing about running a new wire from that brown one to the bulkhead too.  Is it too hard to try and find where the earthing fault may be?  Should it just earth directly or does it run off into the loom?  I haven't taken it all apart yet but it would be nice to have an idea of what I'll be facing!!!
Thanks again,
Rhys

check all the brown wires you can see, plus any points on the chassis where brown wires are terminated.  Also worth running a chuny wire from the side of the head to a coil bracket bolt like  later VWs had :)

Pay particular attention to brown wires to the dash clocks and headlight switch.

Problem solved.  There is an earth wire coming from the coil which earths on the rear nearside nut of the rocker cover. Sorted it straight away
