Title: MFD3/RCD510
Post by: Manu_R32 on 07 January 2008, 00:00
Not sure what its called but the new Head Unit that VW have released on new 2008 models....I sort of realised i still have plenty of time to Spec one of these on the R32...after having the Kenwood DNX 7200 in the GTI i was very very pleased with all its functions but wasnt too happy that it looked abit tacky and out of place where as these head unit fit in just right....Iv heard and read alot about the new system but i just haven given myself the green light to call the stealers tomorrow to see if i can get it sorted for the R....any views opinions would help :)

its called an RNS 510, I got one off ebay and installed myself in my car. very good system, easy to use, you transfer the map data to the internal hard drive, then have approx 20GB left for MP3s, which displays track names, which is cool.
it also has TMC traffic thing, which displays cars on the map when theres a jam.  only thing we cant get it to do is to be able to enter postcodes which aren't in london, and a recent firmware upgrade still doesnt seem to solve this.

however compared to the old MFD2 navi it is light years ahead and worth the money if you like the OEM look.

One thing you can't get in the UK is the bluetooth phone to go via the RNS 510, I still use my parrot.  however you can retro fit, and there some guys over at VWnavi who have done this.

I'm a member of vwnavi.com, so if you have any particular questions you could post over there.

I will try and get some photos up.

Anyone know if the RNS510 works on MY2005 cars?  I heard that there were issues?  Anyone attempted an install...?
Thanks in advance.

On the RNS 510 can someone tell me please how it handles files and folders structure when mp3s are played off the HD? How are the artists etc listed? Is it a similiar layout to an ipod for example? Cheers.

It displayed with artist first, then track name beneath in bigger text, then album below that.

spoke to VW today the rcd510 is £1600 plus you have to buy the nav cd to.
now as this works of a cd the unit will still have to posit itself so i take it must have an antenna, is this internal dash mounted or is it shark fin on roof as this would incur a wee bit of work.

its called an RNS 510!

£1100 off ebay, with nav info already installed.  considering nav DVD is £200 from stealer, thats a big saving.

not sure what you mean by "now as this works of a cd the unit", the data is stored on the internal hard drive, but yes it must have a GPS antenna.

as for antenna, you can just mount it in the dash below the top vent as I did, no need to put shark fin on roof.

one thing you cant do on an RNS 510 (and we cant find a fix for it yet) is to enter a full UK postcode.  strange but true.

loads of info here:  www.vwnavi.com

I am having the Kenwood DDX-7029 fitted this week, same and DNX-7200 but without the sat nav and a few hundred quid cheaper. Have a Tom tom which i am happy with and like the flexibility of being able to take it in work vehicles. My main reason for change is the whole i-pod issue, it completely does my head in not displaying tracks etc.,
