Title: are my wheels too wide
Post by: juleshs on 06 January 2008, 14:32
i have got 15" wheels with 205/60/15 tyres standard suspension
if i hit a bump or throw it into a corner hard, the tyres rub on the arches (badly)
i dont know the dimension of the wheels there are plenty of numbers on them but i dont know what they mean. can anyone advis me on this problem?

hi,

on 15" rims you should ideally be using 195/50/15.......then slam it

The tyres have quite a high profile which certainly won't be helping things. 195/50/15 or 195/45/15 are about right for a 6-7x15" wheel on a mk2.

As for the size and offset of the wheels, it should look something like "6j" "7j" etc (6" wide and 7" wide) and the offset normally looks like "et33" "et25" etc.

Is your car lowered at all? Those wheels with anything up to roughly a 40mm drop and 195/50/15 tyres should be fine, but the tractor tyres at the mo will be causing the issues, not the wheels.

Fit 195/45/15 or 195/50/15 Toyo Proxes or Goodyear Eagle F1, then lower it.

I have the same size/offset wheels with 195/50/15 tyres on. They scrub quite a bit! However, am in the process of having new suspension fitted (-35mm to 40mm) as I suspect the scrubbing was due to knackered shocks.

If this solves the problem I will let you know!
