Title: maybe gonna put a deposit on a mk2 1.3 tomorrow... advice plz?
Post by: samjac68 on 05 January 2008, 00:10
how bist people

im 16, 17 in a month ummckay

ive been looking for a cheap battered mk2 to tinker with and make roadworthy as i love the mk2 shape, had one a while back but was too soon for a project car, couldnt justify spending money on it so it had to go

ive found something better than i wanted, ritey... a 1.3 white 3 door 5 speed golf with 64... yes 64k on the clock, tax til end of this month and mot til november  tis £400

bodywork is mint, i found 3 inches of bubbling behind the front arch and that was it, the interior is so clean and original, think its got the original panasonic casette player aswell

the problem is i havent got the money at the mo, im gonna approach em tomorrow and ask if i can offer them the £140 i have now and pay them every week til ive done £400 (this is the plan)

what i meant to ask was what should i check for? common faults and such, ive pushed on all 4 corners to check shocks, searched high and low for rust, checked the coolant and oil cap for mayo/mix to indicate head gasket failure. just wondering what else to check?

this seems like a really good deal to me, been told by many people why bother just get a more modern car, have one of me mates telling me to get a civic   its between a mk2 or a mk4 polo

sam

I made the mistake of buying one without letting it warm up properly, make sure the carb is working corectly. I had all sorts of problems with mine think i was a bit unlucky though. Take it for a good run that would be my advice!

i did exactly the same as you mate bought a 1990 1.3 at the beggining of jan last year turned 17 at the end of jan and have been doing it up ever since. sounds like you've got your self a decent buy. i love mine to bits well easy to start learning on as everything is easy access. i got robbed by my uncle a bit though when i bought mine. He thinks he knos cars and how to fix em but when i handed 450 quid over i had a look the next day all over the car and immediatly found it needed a few things and over the past year i've put on:
new dizzy cap and rotor arm,
new brake pads and front discs,
handbrake needed adjusting and rear drums cleanin,
one of the rear brake pistons had siezed,
ther was a gaping whole in the front sub frame which i had to replace along with both wishbones
the nylon ball joint at hte bottom of gearshifter had given up (check this by seeing if it slots into reverse without having to push it down, this is a common fault so check it out)
tracking was so got 2 new tyres and tracking sorted
the steering wheel was wonky for some reason after the tracking was done but thats well simple
also put a new bonnet on as i had two huge dints in mine
new slam panel and gti grill
new indicator and indicator relay
lay flat wiper conversion ( mint mod costs nothing and looks the dogs bollocks)
also gave it a service with oil change, oil filter, air filter etc..
front brake hoses and pipes and the rear brake hoses.
and a load other bits tht i forgot atm hense the random order.

to be honest dont regret it and im quite glad i got landed with a bit of a bruiser as i've loved every second of fixing it and doing it up i clean it more than any of my mates in there new crappy corsas and saxos and you respect it more aswell. plus parts are cheap as jodie marsh and if like me on a few minor occasions you accidenlty have a minor bump or scratch, its not the end of the world as it means you can get it up on the axle stands and get it fixed for nothing. tbh all of the parts i'v bought have probably cost a total of £150 absolutle hugest max. i've got a local vw breakers that i've got to kno well as i'm a regular visiter, and if they cant sort you out ebay is brill.

the only down side is insurance. because its a golf you get hacked i decided to go on my on insurance at a bugger of £1600 but after a year no claims its now £750 sumthin.

after wrtiing the biggest essay ever i rekon ther great fun and evry1 on here cn tell u hw to sort out the faults, and although ther as slow a snail in reverse i say buy that utha and u wont look back!

Before I had my GTi, I had an A2 1.3 Jetta for 7 years. A winner all the way. Mine only had 57 thou on the clock when I got here and like Bigman said, there probably will be things to change but that is expected on cars as old as these are. The parts are cheap and easy to get hold of.

The one thing I would advise is to take it for a good spin as oakgreengolf has said (make sure its not warm when you get there too).

The last 6 months I had mine, I had messed with the carb, as I had a few problems (Ironically not with the carb I might add!) and it was never the same again. Up until that point, I had never experienced carb freeze or had any problems whatsoever!

My jetta was a great little runner and had 130 thou on her when she went to car heaven
They are also a good car to learn on as you can fix nearly everything - newer cars have alot more electrics which ties your hands really.

Good luck

and the plan was to wait til i pass to get a car but i really think for £350 its a steal

been to the scrap yard where its at today, it was originally a courtesey car at a local vw dealership, and sold to an old man who kept it til he had his license taken off him, full vw service history aswell

hoping itll be there for a week or two

Yeah, go for it.
I bought the same car in November and have done a few thousand miles in it no probs.
Usual stuff to sort - leaking door membrane, one blown bulb in the dash, minor body touch up from stone chips, new wipers, plus a service.

Check the gear shift issue regarding reverse. Mine has the problem which I haven't sorted yet. Basically, it's very easy to put the thing in reverse rather than first gear. Some issue with the linkage. It's not terminal but a pain.
