Just a quick query for a workmate, his f-plate mk2 8v gti will not go into 5th gear and he is worried it may be gearbox/clutch. Are there any other common faults that could cause this? I seem to remember seeing somewhere that there could be another common, less serious fault that can cause this.....
Cheers

has one of the pins come out of the gear shift rod?
hapened to me a few days ago ... but i could only find 1st :undecided:

check the two little shift rods in the engine bay, if one of these is cracked or broken this is often the result.

On mine i have to press the lever down, as you do going into reverse, to select 5th. I think its the relay shaft ball/bush and the gear linkage bushes that are shot, possible needs the linkage adjusting up for starters. I intend to do mine..........in the summer.

think its the shorter of the two rods with plastic ends that controls 5yh, worth a look??

cheers for all your help, will pass on your advice to him

yep short link rod prob has a crack, had this on my driver and had to push the stick down to get 5th. Was a small hairline crack too, impossible to see untill I took the linkage off and checked!

right, well this car is now mine (well technically my other halfs) so will hopefully investigate this weekend

on the 020 box if the oil gets low the 5th gear is the first to dry up, making engaging difficult

I was just going to post this question myself. My valver just started doing this today. Mine won't go into 5th when the cars hot, when its cold its OK. Probably the oil level low? I just had the clutch done so it could be a linkage also.
I'll check linkage and oil in the morning cheers

keep me posted! have not had a chance to look into it yet, been doing important stuff like changing the wheels instead

I have the same problem, I took it to MB Motorsport and got the Linkage done, it still has'nt sorted 5th but generally made the changes a lot better. I'm going to get the short arm swapped over and top the oil up :)

Have been wondering about this for a while, my valver has trouble with 5th, usually double clutching during gear change assists the shift.
Going to do the oil this weekend after reading this thread, thanks
