Does anyone know if the Golf 1.6 petrol is a clearance engine. ie do the valves hit the pistons if the timing belt goes?

Hi,
If it is the 8 valve 1.6, then I think they miss at low engine speeds.
If it is the later 16 valve 1.6, then im afraid they hit at any speed.
