Post by: dubsport on 03 January 2008, 22:44

have been thinking of putting an 8v head on my 1.6 driver, i heard it is a straight swap and i wont have to get rid of my webber carb? how easy is it to fit?

never done it so dont quote me on it but i believe it will fit..
think u can block the injectors off with 1 pence pieces or leave injectors in.
also read something abt drilling a waterway, dunno if u will need to using webber sorry im unclear on this though

i once put 1.8v carb head on my 1.6 block
also used gti cam
gti manifold and exhaust system
also had a webber, it flew around with this done, might be worth athink??

yeah read it was good to put a 8v GTI cam on ... is this a big task?

not really biggest problem is making sure u line all timing marks up and line it up with new cam in...

Find a PB head and bang it on your 1.6 - the combustion volume is made up in the block not the head.

Spin the injector collets out, drop a penny in each and tighten 'em back down.  I never had any issues with mine for about 2 years on a 1.8 carb motor.

With a correctly jetted Weber you won't regret it - nice rev hungry little monster

found some one local who has a gti cam for sale ... if i was to fit it and get the engine tuned will this alone increase performance?

thanks

yes it will increase performance because it is essentially a higher lift cam AFIK  oh yeah and i was also told that with a webber carb if you run a "little" timing advance it makes it a bit faster aswell and no i dont know how much a "little" bit is

i guess it wont be that noticeable but how much faster are we talking with the GTI cam, webber carb and tuned??
(hoping to get a gti manifold and exhaust system on her to but not any time soon!)

thanks

it should be quite noticeable especially if you get the exhaust manifold as well will feel a lot more rev happy and should pull quite a bit better towards the top end

bolts straight on, and I agree put a full GTI system on while you're there!  I just did that on its own to my 1.6 and it made a real difference.
If you had a 2e2 you would need to drill the head for the coolant chanel (easy) but since you have a webber its not so important.

The main thing to do if you do this and fit a GTI cam is you need to make a new 6degree BTDC mark on your flywheel, the std carby mark is 18degree BTDC and wont make the best of the shiny new cam.

The haynes has the procedure, use the measurements for the 1.8 GTI EV code engine :)
I used a snapped off ruler with some tape wrapped round it down the flywheel timing inspection hole, marked it on wi tipex easy peasy :)

well its up to you, if you prefer to take the gearbox off to do it 'properly' then go right ahead

So if i put a full gti exhaust system on from the maifold down would i need to put an 8v or 16v on? does it take much modifications to fit the manifold etc?

and how much should i be looking to pay for the full exhaust system (already have a new 8v back box)?

thank you very much for all the help :)

If you fit an 8v downpipe you put on the 8v system, if you put on the 16v downpipe you fit the 16v system ;)
You need an 8v manifold though as 8v/16v is different fitment, the 8v & 16v downpipes have the same connection at the top so you can swap em.  The bore is larger on the 16v, 2" bore for 8v, 2.25" for 16v but theres no advantage to a 16v system on a 1.6. 8v will be more than enough and are surprisingly cheap from VAG/GSF :)

Btw 1.8 carbed systems are the same too, apart from the manifold, downpipe & backbox (i.e. the front & rear silencers under the car) if that helps your search.
