Title: new clutch, now car won't start..
Post by: zinderz on 03 January 2008, 13:49
Juts finished changing the clutch on my 8v digifant, everything seemed fine untill I tried to start her up. All I get is the ignition lights and the clicking of the solenoid. Hit this with a few times with a hammer but no difference. Clutch seems fine is engaging and disengaging and the starter motor is turning (I took it away from the flywheel and watched it spin). For some reason, the engine is not turning over. Its not the battery as I have tried bump starting to no avail. Tried rocking off the bollocks of it aswell in case the flywheel is jammed or something, but thats not working either. I'm stumped. So, anyone with any ideas I would greatly appreaciate it.. I seriously hope I haven't arsed up the flywheel or clutch cos its a big job and I've lost patience. The gearbox is all back on fine though so surely the clutch is aligned and flywheel is ok?

HELP?!

Hi
Take the plugs out and see if it turns over by hand

Just tried that, had no luck I'm afraid, won't turn over either way. Its like a full on engine seize. Seems like something must be jamming the flywheel. I've given up for the time being, its driving me insane.. Looks like its the gearbox coming back off

soundfs like you may have put the friction disc in the wrong way round, or not bolted the flywheel on all the way?  The pokey out side of the friction disc should be pointing towards the gearbox if that makes any sence

if you end up taking the gearbox off, check the friction plates there are two sizes, i am not sure if its that just an idea.  i had that problem although mine would run i just could nt engage gears

If memory serves me well, then the starter mount is also the engine mount bracket. Now when you refitted the gearbox, the starter should automatically realign itself, however, wotnot happens. Try, with a jack under the engine, loosening off everything at the front mount, including the starter. Make sure everything is free to move a little, then retighten everything back up, starting with the starter, then the mount itself.
You could off course just try to clean up your earth straps first. They may have got dirty during the clutch change process!

Had this with mine exactly as, was earth strap(s) after a full rebuild, give the strap area a good clean up!!!!
