hi i was fooling around the other day in my 1990 1.3 and i have been wondering for a while how far the rev limiter will allow it to go. before you say its not good pactice i know i shouldn't make a habbit of it! the 1.3 hasn't got a rev counter but it does have red dots on the speedo at 20 ish 40ish 65ish and forgot wot it is in fourth. are these the start of the redlines?? will it eventually hit a revv limiter or will it make a mighty KABOOOM! oh yeah and the top speed according to the speedo was 107mph on my private road is this feasable (spelling?) cheers guys
chris.

ive had an indicated 60 out of my 1.3 golf in 2nd, sounded like a whiurling dervish, and was hardly quick to get there lol!
but then, 1.3's are hardly built for speed are they?!
-
My '85 1.3 had a rev limiter in the rotor arm which was a contact on the end of a spring which extended as the revs increased. I got rid of it though as being a student at the time it was cheaper to buy a std one. I know the car would do 85 in third following my Dad borrowing it. He gave me the keys back saying it was quite a nice car but a bit noisy and wouldn't go over 85 in 5th - I then told him that the car only had a four speed box!!!.

LOL! So he Didn't notice the jerk from 4th @ speed down into 3rd @ speed?
I've accidentally gone into 3rd (from 4th) instead of 5th and it feels like you're going to break your neck, either your dad has a mighty strong neck or just does that all the time?
Offer him a driving refresher course for his birthday  I did to my father and he said 'Ooohh... thanks, Guess I could do with one' I was expecting a 'I've been driving longer than you've been on this earth my son' speech
-
107mph? I only manage about 97mph out of mine... must be the 205 wide wheels slowing me down!

I'm not in a strong position with this one as a year later I put his brand new 5-series on its roof... end over end...

thats amazing

Not as amazing or exciting as letting him drive my nice Alfa 155 with me in the passenger seat and in the process of cancelling the indicator he turned off the headlights ... it was dark ... and we were going around a bend... :shocked:anyone who has driven a Tipo, 155, 145, 146 will sort of understand.
I don't let him drive the golf I have now...

haha brilliant

i had a 1985 golf 1.3 and it had a really tall 3rd gear and 90mph was easy in 3rd i hardly used 4th at all
-
I cant really get mine a lot over 40 in second, it doesnt sound right! The red lines on the speedo are the limits for that gear (they should have one red line, two red lines, three red lines etc...). Incidentally, what year is your golf? If its a later model, it wont have a rev limiter (after the 88spec upgrade it doesnt come with a limiter) so not wise to try and find the limit
-
you sure they are for each gear?? on mine with a 5 speed box.. it seems to be in 5th that those lines match how many k revs im doing?

They are in mine yeah. I'll find a pic, see if yours are the same? I only have the ones up to three lines obviously as only have four speed box.

mines exactly the same and calibrates almost perfectly with my rev counter to being at 1k, 2k and 3k in top gear...
-
I'm slightly confused by this... Are you saying that in fifth, 25mph is 1k revs, 43mph is 2k revs etc? In mine, in first gear, the revs are on the red line at the red line, second gear is on the red when its at the two red dashes etc... I think it says in the instruction manual thats what they're for too?!

You're right, but what he's saying is that there's always some kind of sweet spot when driving where the tacho seems to move at the same pace as the mph needle. In my Pug, 4th gear aligned perfectly with the revs, the needle moved and dropped at the same pace.

i sooo bad want a rev counter
Mines got the red lines aswell :undecided: its a 1.6 5 speed though but only has it in 3 places.

My clocks still 10mins slow from when i changed the battery on wednesday

thnx guys for all the comments so now i know that i shouldn't really find the limit of each gear as its a 1990 so it probably keep going till it busts a gut! i love the "it's not very good in 5th son" dads alsways think they know best!! :smug:
on the rev counter business is it possible to grab a tacho from a gti and get rid of the clock in the dash??
