Ok, after paying an outfit £550 (yes i know) to skim my cylnder heads & recut valves after a while i think its been a waste of time......
my engine is smoking from just under the inlet manifold? (not sure)
would certainly feel alot happier with a new engine, the shell of my car is structually sound, what im after is a bullit proof replacement at minimum cost..... now if i had the tools i would just try and get a direct replacement (16v KR? i think)
but having read the posts on here (and done a bit of searching) i see there is an ABF? or a 9A block.......9A from a Passat? ABF from a mk3?
whats the easiest to do DIY? or at low cost from a garage........ i fancy the 2.0 9a
VR6 looks like it barely fits in the engine bay......
i would be grateful for any Engine related in you guys could give me, or any outfits close buy that you would recommend in Edinburgh

VR6 would probably be out of your budget by the sounds of it (the engine alone can be over £1k) , I think a direct replacement would be easier and cheaper, you might be able to find a donor car for cheap then just straight swap DIY.

hi dude. Id go for the 2.0 16v engine(either 9a or abf) as it would be the most cost effective in your case due to you already having 16v running gear.The 9a is a direct replacement for the kr as the blocks are identical, the abf is long stroke (same capacity) so it is 16mm taller, which can cause clearance issues but nothing serious.Make sure you use the 'KR' camshafts as they are more performance oriantated than the tamed down 2.0 versions(emmisions reasons). run it on the standard k jet injection system, its more than capable. this setup will give between 160 and 180 bhp when setup correctly.
I completed one of these conversions last week (took a day) it is very easy!

Yeah get a 9a complete engine, swap the cams, inlet manifold, injection components, exhaust manifold, clutch and a couple of other bits i cant think of but nothing major.
removing the engine youve got three options in my opinion:
1~ The easiest for an amateur.drop engine and box complete on subframe, swap the engine and bits over hoist it back in.check qpeng guide for removal (its not the same engine but youll get the general idea. http://www.qpeng.com/conversion_guide_5.html
2~ Take front end of the car off, undo the engine mounts etc and remove engine and box out the front of the car, swap engine and components, put back in.
3~My personal favourite, but most difficult. undo bellhousing, pipes, front and rear engine mount. bottom pulley and water pump pulley(for extra clearance), exhaust and other little bits. slide the engine off the box and hoist it out of there!Should look like this

its better if you use the whole kr head not just the cams as the valves in the 9a head are completely different shape to the kr ones and the kr head flows better, and you have already had the head skimmed and the valves recut, so essentially all you are doing is replacing the block with a slightly bigger one

hmm....... if im being honest im not 100% sure what engine ive got Digifant i think.
i think im just going to look for a 16v GOLF/Engine DONOR, if any1 knows of a rock solid engine but scabby shell maybe under 100k PM me i neeeeeed to keep my DUB alive :embarassed:
