Title: OE Sony Headunit Removal
Post by: kae on 25 December 2007, 21:12
Xmas Evening to you all,

I have an OE Sony Headunit in my car (tape & radio unit with CD changer controls) and can't work out how to remove the damn thing!
I've changed HU's in lots of cars, but I can't work out how to remove this one!
There are no obvious places to insert radio removal keys, and removing the front just reveals the innards - nothing to help with removal.

There is definectly a separate unit and cage, but I can't work out how to remove it!

Kae.

i had this problem once, and i couldnt get it out for the life of me, so i just removed some dash and took the cage and HU out together. And replaced the cage. Chances are its not been fitted correctly!

lol, that's exactly what I started to do last night, but it got too cold and dark and I couldn't see how to remove the rest of the surrounding dash (after removing the blanks to either side of the HU).

Anyone got a guide for dash dismantling?

Cheers, Kae

Well i just removed he lower and glove box, got my hand behind, and gave it a push / tug with the help of a screw driver, it all depends on if you want the HU after you done! lol. But i didnt, so i wasnt to careful, but with the glove box out you should be able to leaver it around i reckon.

OE VW sony headunits can b a tad bit tempramental when removing...i'v come across some that have on board alarms built into the radio and when you remove the screws off the front after taht head unit face has been removed, it sometimes triggers a very high pitched alarm that makes it seem as if its coming from somewhere else in the car as its bouncing off all surfaces. neway...generally sony head units is the case of slottin 2 keys about central on either side...but most OE units are the 2 thin slots u see horizontal about tha top of the facia...one being furthest left at the top...and the other about 1 cm in from top right....are these there at all???

If not, then you may have to remove all the front panel to reveal the insides of the radio...and identify where it is being held in by the locking clips from the cage and just push them out from the radio chassis in which time u should tug on the radio to remove!

hope that helps!

Removing the entire front of the radio just shows the innards, but no obvious locking mechanism.

Annoying as hell, might just end up removing the dash at this rate!

Cheers for the offer, I do have a Haynes manual, I should have checked in there for dash removal, never thought!

Anyway, here's the radio if someone knows how to remove it properly.

hey dude....so as i presumed in my earlier post..if you look in the images you have posted...there are 2 tiny horizontal slots about the top...of the radio....one furthest top left...and one about over 1cm fron the top right....u see them??? that is where initially flat keys wud go in2 to release from the cage which i can also see is there.
now that u have removed the front panel to reveal the innards...look at where those slots channel to...n shud in essence see something that the flat keys wud push down to release the unit!!!

hav u tried that already??

Ruji your a star!

Just been out to try again and your right, the locking mechanism is in the top of the radio!
However, those slots are way too thin to let a release key through, so I took off the front of the radio, and the two pieces of metal that lock into the cage were held in by a washer that sits between the piece of metal and the locking strip....

Anyway, nudged them out with a screwdriver and out it came!

Fantastic!

No I just need to sort out this switched earth and a suitable HU!

Anyone know what type of CD changer lead this uses, as I believe there is more than one type?  It's a round plug with a funny shaped connector, I can get a pic if that would help.

Cheers, Kae.

Provided its changer compatible....u'l need a normal round DIN plug.....sorta like a circle wiv 2 lil rectangles inside it. however, being of that age of radio..it may even be the slighly mor round plug wiv several lil pins inside it but thats usually the old Alpine type plugs. so stick wiv the 1st idea. so your looking to add a changer to this one then are ya?? or are you enquiring for a different car??

It's got a cd changer already in the boot. I don't know whether to keep it or ditch it when I change the HU (as I'll be going to mp3 cd's anyway).

i see, well, general rule of thumb wiv the sony's, they have a the round DIN plug for power supply and function control alongside the required phonos to a possible BUS Line In for the audio in transfer...both need to be plugged in2 ur sony head unit in order for the changer to work.

but it may just be worth holding onto for either resale or for any other interested buyer as mentioned b4 by another post or even keep it for sentimental value

Cheers Ruji.

I've decided to keep hold of them for when I sell the car (nothing lasts forever ), although I'm hoping that's not any time soon .

I really like the look of this:

Sony CDX-DAB6650

Or maybe the i version with built in ipod connection (I don't have an ipod yet, but maybe in the future?).
I'd then have to change all my lights to red though......

Decisions, decisions..... Kae.
