Well now folks, a bit of funny banter in the chatroom.
What is a bodykit?
Dizzie thinks its a bumper.
Me and Modulator reckon its the little plastic bits u clip onto ur bumper and onto the sides (side skirts) and possibly i high up spoiler at the rear.
So.
I ask the jury
Which of these two cars has a bodykit?
Exhibit A
(http://www.cs-media.co.uk/~james/vw/siteimages/mk4an2.jpg)
Exhibit B
(http://www.toribaveiculos.com.br/imagens/Imagens%20VW/veiculos/Golf%201.6.jpg)
Which has a bodykit?
-
Just incase ur confused.
<GTI> the mk3 just "LOOKS" bulkier .. cos its got a bodykit
<GTI> i can drive ... just not past my 2yr period yet LMAO
<Dizzie> the mk2 hasn't?
<GTI> mk2 dont have a bodykit
<Dizzie> last time I checked mine did
<vixter> lmao
<GTI> as standard?
<Dizzie> unless some pikey has had it
<Dizzie> bloody ****ers
<Dizzie> they'll have anything these days
<modulater> i thought yours was painted arches dizzie?
<Dizzie> not yet
<Dizzie> it's on the list to do soon
<Dizzie> still grainy black at the mo
<modulater> oi nothing wrong with grainy black lol
<Dizzie> nope
* GTI checks dizzie's bodykit
<Dizzie> I'm still contemplating to leave them unpainted or colour code the lot
<Dizzie> are we saying here that the mk2's bigus bumpers aren't classed as a bodykit?
<Dizzie> hrmm
<GTI> big bumpers ARE NOT a bodykit .. their a bumper
<Dizzie> explain the difference
<GTI> bodykit extends a bumper
<GTI> bodykit has side skirts
<Dizzie> I'd still class the big bumpers as a bodykit though
<modulater> **** me lads and lasses
<modulater> bumpers are bumpers
<GTI> so a 1.4 SE mk4 has a bodykit?
<Dizzie> seeing as it covers the whole of the front and back
<modulater> bodykits are bodykits
<GTI> no .. the ONLY mk4 that has a bodykit is the Anniversary
<Dizzie> R32?
<GTI> R32 = big ass bumpers
<modulater> you say potato
<modulater> i say **** off
<GTI> lol
<GTI> im finding pics
<Dizzie> do I need to find a pic to show the cut out for the exhaust?
<vixter> yes lmao
<Dizzie> on a mk2 big 'bodykit' bumpers?
<GTI> http://www.cs-media.co.uk/~james/vw/siteimages/mk4an2.jpg
<vixter> DO IT
<GTI> see that pic above
<GTI> http://www.cs-media.co.uk/~james/vw/siteimages/mk4an2.jpg
<GTI> and above again
<Dizzie> DO IT
<GTI> see the NORMAL bumper?
<modulater> dizzie mine hasnt got a bodykit
<GTI> well check below it ... bodykit
<modulater> big "bumpers"
<Dizzie> yes. same as mine :p
<modulater> the clue is in the name
<Dizzie> big bumpers bodykit
<GTI> Key features ? 18" BBS RC rims with 225/40 18 tyres. Red brake calipers. Lowered sports suspension. Votex body kit. Chrome exhaust tailpipe (1.8T). <modulater> bumper = plastic things front and back
<GTI> and side
<modulater> *** off
<modulater> lol
<GTI> lol
<modulater> body kit
<modulater> kit
<modulater> kit
Dizzie> well if you look at a small bumper mk2 that's the bumper. it's tiny. then the big bumper one it's huge. cos it's a bodykit like
<modulater> well no
<modulater> so a mondeo has a bodykit?
<GTI> no, its just a BIGGER BUMPER
<GTI> A MORE MODERN BUMPER
<modulater> my ****ing lawnmower has a box at the front to collect the grass
<modulater> is that a bodykit?
<Dizzie> yea
<Dizzie> do you have a spliter on it too
<modulater> yeah it takes the little snail heads off
As u can see, Modulator is gonna cut his grass with a lawnmower which has a bodykit on it?
LOL
-
actually you twisted my words there
I merely said that the mk2's big bumpers were a bodykit.
following what you said a bodykit consisted of you actually confirmed that they were a bodykit seeing as there are front and back extensions and side peices to make the car seem lower and wider
-
Thats why I put the text of what we were saying in as a reply.
Funny read ... but it took ages to filter out the swear words! LOL!
-
please note the only things i said were lmao, yes lmao and DO IT. about as much sense as people usually get out of me at 2 in the morning! :P
-
Yea I cut alot of your stuff out Vix ... but I kept the "DO IT" cos u stole it off me! >:( >:( ;D
-

-
u used that phrase more than once ... but i couldnt give u the privelidge to use it that many times onthe forum 8) :D
-

Do it
-

-

-
u say mine's not a bodykit when it's the exactly the same as the mk3's parts wise. if you took all the bits off you'd have the same.
(CL) ;D
-
(http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/carto1710.gif)
-
IMO exhibit A has a bodykit and exhibit B doesnt.
You lot on chat at 2am, when it's school in the morning, you must be mad ;D
-
I'd say that a bodykit includes big bumpers, but is more than just bumpers.
I'd probably also say that a bodykit is something in addition to the standard body of the car, for example, the clipper and BBS bodykits on the Mk1s (I think both of them include bumpers and side skirts that are in addition to the standard Mk1 GTI/Cab body).
-
bodykit......
arches, bumpers spoilers.
anything that attaches to the body (after market or factory option)
-
i think a body kit completely changes the look of a car, and they usually are grafted and blended onto the car liek arch extensions on jap cars. dimma make body kits etc
-
Bodykits are non DTM additions to the car.
-
DTM is that like OEM ???
-
Why 'non-dtm'?
It could be argued that anything that deviates from the standard specification of the base car is a bodykit - hence when a vehicle that is lauched (a new GTi for example) that deviates from the standard base model, any magazine referring to it calls it a bodykit, including bumpers.
Using that as the benchmark, I would consider MK2 Big bumpers to be classed as a bodykit.
-
if you look at a mk2 with the 'small bumpers' and then look at one with the 'big bumpers' they look completely different due to the extensions front, back and sides that the later kit gives.
mine was orginally born (back in Jan 1987) with small bumpers and in white :o later in it's live with was graced with a paint job (thank god) and the later style 'big bumpers' that changed the look complete. I know this for sure cos a) they weren't around in 1987 afaik and b) half the bloody wings only have 1 hole instead of 2! >:(
The pikey that did the swap forgot to change the arches and add the sil skirts >:( I shall be doing this with G60 items soon - to give a wider look ;D
are we actually sure VW call them big bumpers or is that a name they adopted somewhere along the line?
Black_gti states (and I quote):
<GTI> bodykit extends a bumper
<GTI> bodykit has side skirts
<GTI> bodykit has cutout for exhaust
<GTI> bodykit extends below the bumpers and is a plastic skirt below the door sills
<GTI> bodykits are either black plastic, or better still ... bodycoloured
so really he classed big bumpers are a bodykit there.
although in his first post containing the log form chat he left out half of those details!
-
i class a bodykit as "a multiple piece deviation from standard OEM equipment"
so cars that came fitted with big bumpers dont have a body kit.
but adding big bumpers to a car that didnt come with them is adding a body kit..
get me? :)
-
are we actually sure VW call them big bumpers or is that a name they adopted somewhere along the line?
I can't see the top VW bosses in the late eighties describing the newer mk2 as a big bumper model, but you never know :) I reckon it was just the public that used the bumpers to differentiate the newer mk2 models from the older ones.
-
but adding big bumpers to a car that didnt come with them is adding a body kit..
so mine's got a bodykit then
-
yup :)
-
but black_gti's mk3 came like that therefore his isnt' a bodykit :P
-
so anyone know when the clipper kit first arrived as im assuming mine was added later and also a bodykit???? ;D
-
^ dont get what you're saying :)
but black_gti's mk3 came like that therefore his isnt' a bodykit :P
yup also. :)
-
well when did the clipper kit first appear on mark 1s?
-
Big bumper convs on a Mk2 are not body kits. They are a conversion.
The 90 model was always known as the "big bumper" model. I think it had something to do with the size of the bumper in comparison to the previous version, which were small.
Now, some kraut at VW may of called the big bumpers Gunter, but i'm probably quite sure they called it "Big Bumper" albeit in German.
Clipper was 91 wasnt it?
Tin
-
Kit: A set of parts or materials to be assembled
That'd be a front, back and side parts along with a spliter on the front. ;D
-
Wasn?t golf?s that came with big bumpers also called the facelift model?
-
Bumper = Bumper ...
Bodykit = clips onto lower part of bumper.
Check the mk4 pics .. Exhibit A has black plastic at the bottom of the bumper... IS THAT a bodykit??? NO! ... its the BUMPER.
...
Oh and mine aint the standard bodykit .. its sprayed black and has a completely different front splitter.
-
wtf????
Like Dizzie said...
A body kit is a kit....
It all depends on your definition.
-
A bumper is a bumper
...
its all in the name
-
so your saying a car with non standard bumpers doesnt have a bodykit?
-
Yes I am... here ... read this from the PRO's lol ... of modifying.
Bodywork:
Veilside front BUMPER
Citroen quad headlights
Badboy F50 style bonnet
smoothed and blended arches
BMX sideskirts
TriplexXxreme rear BUMPER
from MaxPower march 2003.
No sign of a bodykit on that Saxo .. just fancy 3rd party bumpers... different from the originals! ... not bodykit ... bumpers
-
you're shot away.
Would you prefered it if we called it body styling??
I think you''re splitting hairs somewhat.
-
No, cos its a bumper.
its just a different bumper to what the mk2 originally had ... still a bumper tho.
