HI, for all who contributed to helping me fix my golf mk2 i want to say thank you!!!!       :nerd:
however it was not a vaccum leak, ignition coil etc.... the starting and turning off/idling/stalling problem was due to wrong engine adjustments... or somthing like that, any way the mechanic sorted it out in 30mins and only carged me £10...wow  he said that the last owner fiddled with adjustments in the engine
my new problem, which i do not know if it is a problem  is the fuel consumption.
I put a tenner in and it lasts about 1 day maybe 2, with normal use.
Is this normal? My golf is a gti mk2 8valve.
any help is much apreciated
also how much petrol do you put in a week?
everyone on this board, who are very nice people for helping others out for free, unlike those awful vw mechanics who charge £80 for "diagnostics", i wish all these nice people on this board a very merry christmas and happy new year.

depends on ur normal 2 day mileage ????????
for me it would be dire, mine doesnt move during the week
-
my day t day millage would be about 6miles i think, normal erand driving, you know, little shopping, pop down to the gym-that kinda thing :nerd:

Car won't even be getting warmed up doing those type of runs, running on cold start all the time and going thru fuel very quickly!!
I get 300mls on a a full tank combine driving, this works out about 31mpg, so Im happy!
try taking it on a longer run see how it goes.
-
maybe your mechanic friend, just wacked up the fuel to air mixture to sort your problems out? or your leaking fuel id say
-
Well, I usually put in £20 for my 50mile a week commute (plus local runs to shops etc) then still have a litte left over when I put the next £20 in.

The way I work it out is, to fill her up till the pump clicks off twice. reset the clock then drive it as close to empty but not being silly, then fill her up again till the pump clicks off twice. then with your receipt in hand for volume of fuel and your trip miles you can see how many miles for exactly how much fuel! there are plenty of conversion sites for litres-gallons. I have had my '90 8v rebuilt, balanced, polished and I'm seeing an average of about 37 mpg
here is another link I found on this site but can't remember the thread :embarassed: but I've saved it as a favorite:

best of luck

I do a daily 80 mile round trip on a tenner so i think you have a problem!
Fingers crossed it's something simple like a leak. Is it an 8v Digi?
I remember a mechanic i used to use would fiddle with something to get the car through it's emissions and then richen it up again to stop it running like a slag! Cowboys, gotta love 'em! (We need a Yee-Ha smiley!)

Mine on a long run to Leicster or Birmingham (both over 90 miles 1 way) does really well on £40, because I've still got about £20 left in the tank after a journey like that  It's just the small local runs that cost more. Makes me thankful I only have a 1.6L sometimes
-
thanks everyone.
you guys get so much more out of your golfs fuel.--lucky bastards!!!
i am going to go to another mechanic and get it diognosed.....
will post back results of diognosis.
merry christmas

i do a 80mile round trip everyday and it costs about a tenner a day in the golf, one point of interest is that its 15 years old and has done 98000miles but its better on fuel than my year old saab even when driven the same.
-
if you can smell petrol with the engine running id say its over fueling but the digi system does that. if you can smell fuel with the engine off then you have a leak. i had a leak last year. took me ages to find it. eventually found the fuel filter by the pump under the car had a tiny pin hole under the bracket.
i have the same problem again now but i am putting it down to fitting an uprated fuel pressure reg. i just got 112 mile on 30 quid. but i do floor it everywhere too. i might pop it along to midland vw in january and have it rolling roaded again. :undecided:

i had problems with my mk2 gti 8v.it kept dying at lights and junctions for no particular reason.always started again but someone suggested the idle valve so i changed that but to no avail!!
in the end i got a mobile tuner to look at it who works on a private collection of classic ferraris, lambo's etc and he used to sell golfs so he knows his stuff.
£30 later and i got 42.9 mpg on the way to manchester from devon, more than happy with that.its levelled off a bit now and averages about 38-40 mpg on long trips.
cracking car,love it to bits!!
