hi, im stuck and need help off those of you who have put a mk3 engine in a mk 2 golf
i have used the mk3 subframe but the pulley on the end of the crank that runs the power steering is rubbing on the chassis leg,i dont want to have to take the engine back out and start beating the life out of the chassis,is there any other way to solve this problem????

Are you using the mk2 alternator setup etc or the mk3?

Why don't you use the Golf2 subframe?
I'm confused as to why you'd use the Golf3 sub-frame in a Golf2?

ITS ALL MK3 AT THE MO. DO I NEED A MK2 ALTERNATER,IF I SWAP THE PULLEYS FOR MK2 WILL I NEED A MK2 POWER STEERING PUMP

I WAS TOLD TO USE MK3 SUB FRAME BECAUSE OF THE MOUNTINGS (DIDNT COST ANYTHING I HAD A VERY ROTTEN MK3 IN MY GARAGE)

Ive never heard of it causing rubbing issues, the chassis legs not bent is it?
Does the engine sit any lower in the bay did you notice using the mk3 subframe?
Im wondering if its anything to do with the engine mountings you are using, i take it your using mk3 rear mount and gearbox mount and a mk2 front mount?

the chassis leg is sound,been to scrap yard today and i have noticed that on a mk3 the crank pulley that drives the alternator is wider than rhe mk2. does anyone no if pulleys are inter changable between models and will i have to change the whole power steering pump? yes im using mk3 mounts at rear and mk2 at the front

What mk3 engine are you actually using btw?
Im just assuming you were using a 2.0 8v, if thats the case plenty of people use them in mk2s with no problems, even running the mk3 alternator etc ive not heard of any problems. The only thing is ive not seen much info on doing it all using a mk3 subframe so this could possibly be something to do with it (although i have read the mk3 subframe lets the engine sit lower?)
Thats why i think its something to do with mountings as the mk3 block is taller than the mk2 block and when fitting the engine into a mk2 people normally use all mk2 engine and gearbox mounts

the engine is a mk3 1900 td. i have nowered the whole sub frame with 10mm shims (told it was safe by a mechanic) which drops the pulley about 4mm below chassis leg set off in first but with the torque the pulley still catches

Cool... I have a TD engine from a mk3 put by & plan on dropping it into a mk2 in the spring... :wink:

still stuck with this bloody thing, are the pulleys inter changable between mk2 and mk3??

have been told previously the mk2 and mk3 alternator pulleys are not interchangable
Dont know how true it is though

SO WOULD I HAVE TO CHANGE THE ALTERNATOR AND THE POWER STEERING PUMP, AS THE POWER STEERING PUMP RUNS DIRECT OFF THE CRANK PULLEY. SO IM WONDERING IF I CAN CHANGE THE WHOLE SET UP TO RUN SAME AS MK 2. JUST DONT KNOW WHICH OF MY EXISTING PARTS I CAN USE

yes i think you have to change over to all the mk2 stuff, this includes bottom pulley, pas pump brackets, alternator brackets, pas pump, and alternator iirc

Hi, im running a mk2 gti with the older 1.6 IDI TD in it. depending how it goes next year will be looking at the same conversion and am only in Huddersfield, so will have to get some tips from you mate. My conversion was allready done, but is running power steering with no problems.
If you chat with the guys at www.vwdiesel.net they might be able to help. Im sure ive seen them knocking the hell out of the chassis leg to get the clearance they need.

Could always try a solid front mount to try and reduce engine movement

does anyone have any pictures of the pulley set up on a mk2 with poer steering so i can compare it with mine so i know what it needs to look like when its done...cheers
