Post by: jim182 on 17 December 2007, 09:50
Right i picked my new golf up yesterday from bradford... 3 hour drive but it was worth while! shes a g reg 1600 with full 90 spec gti trim inside n out in red.. nice looking respray 6months ago... bbs RA's... jetta front end (imo)...Gti suspension... scorpion zust(i think)...German style plates... basically shes a very clean looking car!!

Just a few things that need sorting
i need some advice on...

Dash lights dont work! .... (is this easy to fix? i was thinking of gettin blue ones off ebay)
speedo is wrong and makes a clicking sound!... (what could be causing this?)
Heating only works on speed 3 and stays cold... ( how do i fix this?)

Things i wanna do

Get rid of jetta front end
Wire front fogs up
change zust for a nicer looking and sounding one
clear indiys n side repters

heater your probably looking at ditching the bypass valves, and probably a new matrix if yours is all gunked up. and maybe a new fan unit if it doesnt blow on 1 or 2?

its always worth flushing the coolant system first cos the heater matrix is quite time consuming and highly annoying! (but OHHHHHHHHH so satisfying) chances are the system could do witha flush anyway.

a quick way to tell if ya matrix is fubard is to remove both hoses going through your engone bay bulkhead into the cabin and run a hose into the heater matrix if the flow is restricted your heater matrix is blocked.

if i were you though id flush the system and then bleed it properly as per rubjonnys guide in the mk2 maintenace and info as an airlock in the matrix will stop the heat aswell.

heater matrix new costs £36 from GSF. if you get it done at a garage it would probably cost a bomb as like i said its quite time consuming and you know the garage arent gonna rush to get it done. its not hard to do its just abit fiddley! but once i had done it i was amazed at how hot the heater is and i never thought having a heated car would be a novelty!

dash lights.......sounds like a fuse as the whole dash isnt working

dunno about the speedo mate

souds like there is 2 problems with the heater, change the relay on the motor to get all speeds working, and replace the bypass valve to get heat again/ or you have an airlock.

i didnt think the matrix's stopped working, thought they just leaked!  dont know about the other problems

my heater stopped working as the matrix was only letting a dribble of coolant through

It all sounds confusing!
I fink il get one of my mates who unlike me knows somthing about cars to have a look at it!!

also it came with a toad alarm & immo and on the remote it has two buttons but only one is used!
would it be possible to fit central locking and then tune it to the right frequency so this other button would lock and unlock the car insted of having two fobs on my keys??

My heater squeeks on 3 and only blows air out on that setting aswell  i just leave it on 1 and it lets warm air through lol is it hard to change the motor? it sounds like its near the glove box when it squeaks.

"speedo is wrong and makes a clicking sound!... (what could be causing this?)"

Clicking from the speedo could be down to trip counter.  I had this after I put my clocks back in.  Have you tried pressing the reset button on it? I could be wrong but its worth a go....

"My heater squeeks on 3 and only blows air out on that setting aswell  i just leave it on 1 and it lets warm air through lol is it hard to change the motor?"

Changing the heater motor's easy. Its in the passanger footwell.  Take off the foam protecting the top of the footwell - or just peel it back from the motor so you can get at it.  Unplug it.  Grab the motor, twist (can't remember which way) and it should drop out.

liek everyone else said. heater motor resistor on the side of the motor

flush the heater matrix and bleed the cooling system again.

DONT go down the blue dash light route. I soo wanna get rid of mine. looks chav and you cant dim the light as they are led's and not bulbs

Blue dash = chav/boi racai imo
Defo change the Jetta front end back to quad lights.
But hey it's your car.
Sorting out the 'Small things' is a good idea, especially as one is the heating system!

All in all, sounds like you picked up a decent little car.

How much did you pay for it, if I may ask?

Pretty pricey for a 1.6 Driver imo, well I did pay £196 for mine with GTi trims  with 4 months MOT but no tax, but she drives really well, only thing I need to replace is the handbrake cable I snapped the other night  well in my defense it was rusted to feck!
