Title: Flickering lights
Post by: Dec on 16 December 2007, 20:22
When i was driving earlier i noticed that my front lights when on normal beam were slightly flickering. They went slightly duller then brightned up abit.

I noticed that the radios illumination and the dash lights (heater ones and speedo ones etc...) all did aswell.

Why does it do this? seems to be where the engine ticks over. Do i have a problem with my wiring or is it nothing to worry about?

Im also worried that when i get around to replacing the 6x9s in my boot and the 3.5" in the dash along with wiring my new head unit in (still havent done it ) and putting an amp/sub in the boot that im going to get worse effects and damage something

Cheers guys

I don't have the uprated headlight loom and mine don't do that. It sounds like some sort of electrical fault.
That kind of thing usually happens when the voltage/current it reduced. From what you said on another post about having to charge up your battery, I would say it could be that your battery needs replacing or if you don't replace it certainly check the water level in each cell.

Come to think of it does it happen while playing music loud?

Once your engine is running it is the alternator that mainly drives all the elecrtrics. If the brushes are worn on the alternator then it may not be putting out enough or consistent amperage. Also since the alternator shoves out AC this has to be rectified to DC for the car electrics. There is some sort of electonics that do this - unsure where or how but that might be gone as well/instead. Not much help I know but something else to have search for and look at. Any auto electrician should be able to test the output of your aternator - KwikFit or somewhere like that mght be able to check it out for you.

I agree with mattneck. Great thing about that is it's cheap and 2 screws to replace! it's on the back of the alternator, just take it out and see how worn the bushes are.
