Title: Rust Protection?
Post by: Conker on 15 December 2007, 14:33
After temporarily removing the upper torsion bar from my Mk2 (better access to the head), I've found light rust:

What should I do to protect the turret before I screw the torsion bar back on again - Is there some sort of grease I should apply e.g. copper grease?  The bolts for the torsion beam do not have nuts, they are just screwed straight into the body shell, so should I also be protecting the bolt holes as well?

Cheers for any suggestions.

clean rust back to bare metal and spray with etch primer then paint whatever colour you want and for the holes i would put plenty of copper grease on them, last thing you want is your suspension turrets rusting away

As above I would strip the area back to the bare metal and sand/grind any rust left then I would use a good rust treament on the whole area and then etch prime

Balls.

I was hoping to just spray on some sort of uber-grease to prevent all further oxidisation.

clean it up while it is still only a minor problem, you will thank yourself later

Can't believe the 'tard that fitted the torsion bar didn't do more to protect against damp that would obviously build up underneath it. Grrr.

Probably a bit late now - I guess you have put the torsion bra (deliberate) back on. But i would blather the whole thing in Waxoyl - unless you want the paintwork to be as good as the exterior bodywork - lol

I swear by Waxoyl - amazing stuff.

I've not refitted it yet as I've been doing loads of work on the engine and it gets in the way.

I was wondering if I could use waxoyl...

IMO waxiol is very good but I would still sand/grind all the rust you can see then use a good rust treatment and then plaster with waxoil. Just make sure your realy thourough, you dont want that area rusting out

First thing I'm doing to the Mk2 when I get one is stripping all the under rust and waxoyl and sealing the lot! Will also be cleaning out all arches and waxoyling and sealing all the joins :) Nothing like getting covered in Waxoyl! :)
