On my golf (gti 8v) i have been attempting to fix the rev counter, but no joy....took the clocks out and tried another speedo but still no joy...any ideas anyone!!
also the mfa is not working, all lights up but no joy when pressing the stalk etc,,, would the fix on the rev counter also fix this problem ??
-
Took my clocks out the other day to try and sort a rev counter problem, one thing i found was that a previous owner has created a new earth from the rev counter that was earthing on a dash bracket, if i removed it from the bracket my rev counter stopped working, it may be worth you earthing the rev counter and seeing if it works then
I have tried various other things such as replacing the lead that goes from the coil to the camcover as it was broken but it made no difference, I also cleaned up the connections on my coil which made no difference.
I am planning to trace the wire and fix the break but im having difficulty finding the wire i need to check at the minute, once thats done im going to see if it fixes both my rev counter issues, if not then im trying a spare coil i have as well
As the mfa is also not working on yours i would check that the vac pipe on the back of the unit isnt broken or splitting

the vacuum pipe is sucking air in when i removed it from the clocks etc...how do i earth the rev counter ??
-
Sart your car, pull out fuse 21, then put it back in.

So many things you can try, but just to add on my valver when the rev counter stopped working due to me putting blue leds in it, i loosend the nut directly behind the rev counter and didn't tighten it up as much fearing i'd break something!
Rev counter wouldn't work until i nipped it up

On mine if yoU look on the back f the rev counter there is a nut which is i think 5 or 6mm, undo that, get some wire, wrap it round the stud, do the nut back up, refit the clocks, hold the other end of the wire against the metal dash bracket and start the car and see if the rev counter works then

i have a rev counter problem too! mine, however, does kinda work. it under reads! so at tick over it shows 0prm rev it a bit and it picks up but not what it is supposed to be reading! any ideas??

Does it sometimes "go bananas"? As in flying round the dial. Mine was doing this (and had the symptoms you describe above) and a new hall sender and a good clean of the hall sender plug cured the problem.

Wonder if mine could have something to do with that, mine gets to 5000rpm then just stops dead on the needle even though the car physically revs past it still
Lucky i have a spares car so i can swop some bits over and see what fixes it

Hi There,
I was intersted to know whether you managed to fix the problem with your Rev counter and MFA. I have the exact same problem with my J Reg 8v and have not yet been able to solve it. Mine used to work and cut out every now and then, but for the last six months it has not worked at all.
Cheers, Tom
