Title: G60 steel wheels
Post by: jammac on 12 December 2007, 12:22
im thinking of getting some of these as they are pretty cheap brand new and my BBS RA wheels are kerbed to hell.
they need a good refurb but for the price it will cost i could get a set of steelies and new decent tyres.

just wanted to see some pics of anyones golf with a set really to help me decide.

cheers geezers

Post by: lewis1641 on 12 December 2007, 16:26
they are 195/50/15's the problem i think is matt black paint has a tendency to make anything look smaller. its something to do with not reflecting light apparently!

Id really like a set of these aswell, cant run to alloys and i think these look ace,

where are you gettin them from? i heard a rumor on the web else where VW still sell them at 35each? My Local dealer never got back to me, may pop in with a photo see if they do?

Cheers Guys

By the looks of it BSCR you have the same as rik1985austin and myself, which I think are standard on 1.6 drivers. Give 'em a bit of elbow grease and they'll look like brand spankers

Although mine could probably do with a scrub to get rid of the SMALL amount of surface rust and a good respray.

A friend @ work has some nice alloys he spent over £600 on and will let them go to me for £200 (thats the rim and new tires) but being a father of 2 over xmas time means no treats for the car
Let's hope he still has 'em in the new year!

back up what jayton says about the old steelies.

the drivers wheels were in a right state so i spent an hour a wheel rubbing down and cleaning them

then even longer SLOWLY masking the tyres getting the tape down  between the rim and rubber.

and finally the old rattle can

before

after

So are these rims the G60 ones or just standard VW GolF Mk 2 rims? Or do the G60 rims look similar from a distance/photo?

Love my G60 Steels, and they were pretty cheap, in fact four tyres cost more than the wheels did! Though, i think they look MUCH better with the black centres, and not the silver disc types...

This is true, the best thing about them is the price. They are a crap width and man are they heavy. Make an OK winter wheel tho.

if they were the standard ones then what do i have?

Theyre not G60 as i have circle holes in mine unlike the shaped G60's. Theyre also only 14" (i think). They look similar and are all silver (including under the stupid caps)

Old pic!

Dec: you have the standard 14" steels found on the earlier drivers and gti's. The other wheels that Hobbiniho posted a pic of are 13" and normally found on the golf C and gl etc i think

Yea, look at the holes, they have a slight grooving towards the centre cap and the holes are bigger and less of them which I noticed. But our's still look cool with a scrub and spray.

So they're off a rocco? Just did some google image searching and the only ones with steelies have the ones with loads of holes like dec's..

Yeah, i think the Drivers had 14 inch and 15 holes, and the "sports steels" from Gti's were 14 inch and had 12 holes? Not entirely sure, but i think i read that somewhere!

The guy who owned my 8v before me bought a new set of steelies from VW (Aug 2006 - still got the receipt). They are the '12 hole' ones referred to by jmallows. With the hub caps they came to 186.40 GBP incl VAT. They are 14" and look pretty dam smart -for steelies. Hope to get some 15" BBS at some time and downgrade the steelies to winter wheels.
